14th March 1887 Herman’s father Elias dies, before Herman is born, aged 35 after a Road Traffic Accident. Herman’s mother Elizabeth is left aged 32 with 5 children under 12 and another on the way and also takes over the Green Grocer business.
4th November 1887 Herman born posthumously at 71 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan. Herman has 2 middle names which must have been unusual at the time.
1887 To 1891 Herman’s family moves to 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan.
13th April 1891 Josephine born at 144 Bridgewater Street Hindley to William and Ellen Gerrard, William is a Collier.
10th October 1893 Herman’s sister Elizabeth dies aged 17 at 87 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan of Typhoid Fever. Herman is aged 5.
4th June 1911 Herman’s brother Thomas marries Margaret Jones at St Catherine Scholes Wigan. Herman is aged 23, here are photos of a young Herman and a young Josephine (provided by Anne Owen)

2nd January 1916 Herman and Josephine married at All Saints Hindley. Herman is aged 28 a Bookkeeper from Wigan and Josephine is aged 24 from 90 Ladies Lane Hindley.
18th January 1918 Son Raymond Smith Nixon born at 90 Ladies Lane Hindley (Josephine’s old address, maybe they were living with her parents). Herman is a Clothiers Wages Clerk.
19th June 1921 Census. Family living at 90 Ladies Lane Hindley. Herman is aged 33 a Wages Clerk for Brown & Haigh Wholesale Clothing Manufacturers of Wood Street Mills Wallgate Wigan, Josephine is aged 30 and son Raymond is aged 3.
7th June 1924 Daughter Marjory is born at 6 Swan Lane Hindley, Herman is a Clothiers Wages Clerk.
1924 To 1936 Family moves to Swinley Wigan.
3rd January 1936 Herman dies aged 48 at 17 Kingsway Swinley Wigan of Endocarditis he was a Commercial Clerk. Informant was Josephine who was present at the death.
8th January 1936 Herman buried at Lower Ince Cemetery. Religion is given as Non Conformist.
1936 To 1939 Family moves to Whitley Wigan.
29th September 1939 Register. Family living at 7 Eskdale Avenue Whitley Wigan. Josephine is aged 48, son Raymond is aged 21 an Assistant Salesman at a Drapers and daughter Marjory is aged 15.
17th March 1949 Josephine dies aged 57 at Billinge Hospital of Breast Cancer, she was living at 7 Eskdale Avenue Whitley Wigan. Herman’s occupation is given as Cashier (Tailors). Informant is son Raymond of the same address.
22nd March 1949 Josephine buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in same grave as Herman (photo provided by Anne Owen).

22nd June 1949 Daughter Marjory marries John Westhead Polding at St John Wigan. John is aged 29 a Property Repairer from 148 Wigan Lane and Marjory is aged 25 a Clerk at Municipal Treasurers from 7 Eskdale Avenue Whitley Wigan. One of witnesses is a Margaret Nixon which could be Marjory’s cousin the daughter of Herman’s brother Thomas Nixon. John and Marjory live in Whitley Wigan and have 1 son. Marjory dies aged 93 on 25th February 2018 at Wigan Infirmary of Rectal Cancer, she was living at 66 Spencer Road Whitley Wigan. Informant was her son.
10th September 1949 Son Raymond marries Norah Lea at New Jerusalem Church Scholes Wigan. Raymond is aged 31 a Credit Drapers Traveller from 7 Eskdale Avenue Whitley Wigan and Norah is aged 23 an Assistant Teacher Primary living at 8 Monument Road Swinley Wigan. One of witnesses is a Margaret Nixon which could be Raymond’s cousin the daughter of Herman’s brother Thomas Nixon.
