Thomas is aged 40 a Grocer’s Manager working for his mother Elizabeth at 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan, Margaret is aged 40, son Thomas is aged 9, son Alfred is aged 6, daughter Margaret is aged 4 and daughter Florence is aged 1. Thomas’s mother Elizabeth and Thomas’s brother Alfred are living at 84 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. The Nixon family therefore occupying 3 adjacent houses in Darlington Street Scholes Wigan, 86 was the Grocer business, mother Elizabeth and brother Alfred living at 84 and Thomas and family living at 82.

27th February 1931 Thomas’s mother Elizabeth dies aged 76 at 84 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. Thomas is the Informant and was present at the death. In the death certificate his address is given as 84 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan which could be a mistake or maybe he had moved into Elizabeth’s house.
1931 Thomas takes over running of Grocer Business (if he hadn’t already been running it).
1st June 1935 Thomas dies aged 54 at 82 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan of Cardiac Failure. Margaret was the Informant and was present at the death.
5th June 1935 Thomas buried at Lower Ince Cemetery. Religion is given as Non Conformist, maybe they switched to this after their last child was baptised in an Anglican church in 1925.
16th July 1935 Thomas’s probate is granted, he left £97k in today’s money to Margaret and also to a Thomas Nixon, Grocer. This is probably his son Thomas who was aged 23 at the time and he continued to run the business.
1st June 1936 Son Thomas marries Gladys Elizabeth Edes at New Jerusalem Church Scholes Wigan. Thomas is aged 24 a Grocers Manager living at 82 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan and Gladys is aged 26 of Wigan. Witness and probable best man is son Thomas’s brother Alfred. Perhaps Margaret and children had moved from number 84 to number 82 after Thomas’s death.
29th September 1939 Register. Family living at 82 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. Margaret is aged 58, son Alfred is aged 25 a Grocers Dealer Manager (presumably at the family business), daughter Margaret is aged 22 a Grocer’s Assistant (presumably at the family business), daughter Florence is aged 19 some kind of machinist and son Sydney is aged 14. Thomas’s brother Alfred who had been an assistant at the Grocers but is now retired is living at number 84. Maybe son Alfred took over running of the Grocer sometime after son Thomas was married.
27th October 1940 Son Alfred marries Hilda Mary Taylor at New Jerusalem Church Scholes Wigan. Alfred is aged 25 a Grocers Manager living at 82 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan and Hilda is aged 23 a Motor Omnibus Conductress living at 90 Darlington Street East Scholes Wigan. Witness and probable best man is a Thomas Nixon likely to be son Alfred’s brother.
20th November 1940 Daughter Margaret marries Vincent Arthur Hagerty at Wigan Register Office. Vincent is aged 27 in the Royal Air Force living at 51 Forge Street Ince Wigan and Margaret is aged 23 a Grocers Assistant living at 82 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. Daughter Margaret’s sister Florence is a witness. Vincent and Margaret live in Scholes Wigan where Vincent is a Car Salesman, they have no children. Margaret dies aged 79 on 9th February 1997 at Wigan Infirmary of Pancreatic Cancer, living at 6 Riley Square Scholes Wigan. Informant was daughter Margaret’s brother Sydney.
31st March 1945 Daughter Florence marries Harold Smith at New Jerusalem Church Scholes Wigan. Harold is aged 29 an Army Sergeant living at 117 Belle Green Lane Ince Wigan and Florence is aged 25 a Munitions Worker living at 82 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. A witness and probable best man is a Thomas Nixon probably daughter Florence’s brother. Harold and Florence have 2 children, move to Poole Dorset and Harold works as a Building Site Manager. Florence dies aged 78 on 17th January 1999 at Kingland House Rest Home Poole Dorset of Dementia, she was a Retired Seamstress.
13th September 1948 Son Sydney marries Irene Collins at St Stephen Whelley Wigan. Sydney is aged 23 a Traveller living at 82 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan and Irene is aged 23 a Tailoress living at 4 Ellis Street Whelley Wigan. A witness and probable best man is son Sydney’s brother Alfred.
18th May 1977 Margaret dies aged 96 at 64 St Marys Road Poole Dorset of Hypertension. Informant was daughter Florence who lived at the same address.
