Overview
Elias Nixon was born in 1851 in Winstanley Wigan the son of a Farmer. Elizabeth Prior was born in 1854 in Central Wigan the daughter of a Labourer. Elias and Elizabeth were married in Wigan Parish Church in 1874. They lived in Scholes Wigan and had 8 children before Elias died aged 35 in 1887. Elizabeth died aged 76 in 1931.

26th November 1851 Elias born at Jamesons Farm Winstanley Wigan to Edward and Jane Nixon, Edward is a Farmer.
1852 to 1853 Elias’s family moves from Winstanley Wigan to Pottery Wallgate Wigan and Elias’s father Edward becomes a Labourer. Either they could no longer make a living at Jamesons Farm Winstanley Wigan or the landowner evicted them. Elias is aged 1.
21st August 1853 Elias’s mother Jane dies at Pottery Wallgate Wigan of Typhus aged 37. Elias’s father Edward is aged 48 with 7 children under 15, Elias is aged 1.
August 1853 to December 1853 Elias’s family move from Pottery Wallgate Wigan to Ince Wigan and Edward becomes a Labourer in a Coal Mine. Elias is aged 1 to 2.
11th December 1853 Elias’s brother Henry dies at Ince Green Lane Ince Wigan of Pneumonia aged 5. Elias is aged 2.
1853 to 1855 Elias’s family move from Ince Wigan to Hindley. Elias is aged 2 to 4 so probably won’t remember all of this trauma.
8th July 1854 Elizabeth born at Moore’s Buildings Frog Lane Springfield Wigan to Thomas and Elizabeth Prior, Thomas is a Labourer.
5th August 1855 Elias’s brother John dies at Lowe Green Hindley of Hemiplegia. Elias is aged 3.
14th January 1866 Elias’s father Edward dies at Queen Row Lowe Green Hindley of Asthma aged 60. Certificate indicates that he had Asthma for 2 years. His occupation was Horse Man in Coal Mine. Elias is aged 14 and is now an orphan.
2nd April 1871 Census. No trace of Elias can be found in the census, or anywhere else to explain his whereabouts between his father’s death and his marriage.
16th August 1874 Elias and Elizabeth married at Wigan Parish Church. Elias is aged 22 a Collier living in Frog Lane Springfield Wigan and Elizabeth is aged 20 also living in Frog Lane Springfield Wigan.
1874 Elias and Elizabeth move to 16 Atherton Street. There is currently an Atherton Street in Newtown Wigan but the first mention of that in Wigan World is 1903, so the Atherton Street lived in by Elias and Elizabeth must be that off Harrogate Street Central Wigan, which no longer exists. This is also confirmed by the baptism record of daughter Jane which gives residence as Harrogate Street Central Wigan.
15th October 1874 Son Edward born at 16 Atherton Street Central Wigan. Elias is a Coal Miner, Elizabeth must have been pregnant at time of their marriage. Son Edward dies the same day of “Unknown” cause, since “No Medical Attendant”, age at death given as 7 Hours. Birth and death were both recorded on 16th October by Elias who was present at the death. No baptism or burial records can be found for son Edward.
4th December 1875 Daughter Elizabeth born at 16 Atherton Street Central Wigan, Elias is a Coal Miner.
16th January 1876 Daughter Elizabeth baptised at Wigan Parish Church.
9th November 1877 Daughter Jane born at 16 Atherton Street Central Wigan, Elias is a Coal Miner.
2nd December 1877 Daughter Jane baptised at Wigan Parish Church.
17th December 1877 Daughter Jane dies aged 1 month at 16 Atherton Street Central Wigan, cause of death is “Accidently Suffocated”, Elias is a Coal Miner.
20th December 1877 Daughter Jane buried at Lower Ince Cemetery.
28th November 1878 Son Edward born at 16 Atherton Street Central Wigan, Elias is a Coal Miner.
1878 To 1881 Family move to 71 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan, which is not far from their previous address.

3rd April 1881 Census. Family living at 71 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan. Elias is aged 30 a Coal Miner, Elizabeth is aged 26, daughter Elizabeth is aged 5, son Edward is aged 2 and son Thomas is aged 1 month. Also living there are Elizabeth’s two siblings Jane aged 15 a Domestic Servant and James aged 13 a Coal Miner (maybe Elias’s assistant?)
10th April 1881 Son Thomas baptised at Wigan Parish Church.
1881 To 1882 Elias becomes a Green Grocer.
4th November 1882 Son Alfred born at 71 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan, Elias is a Green Grocer.
10th December 1882 Son Alfred baptised at Wigan Parish Church.
14th December 1883 Son Edward dies aged 5 at 71 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan of Scarlatina Nephritis.
17th December 1883 Son Edward buried at Lower Ince Cemetry in same grave as daughter Jane.
17th May 1885 Daughter Lily born at 71 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan, Elias is a Green Grocer.

14th March 1887 Elias dies aged 35 at 71 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan after a Road Traffic Accident 4 days earlier. Elizabeth is left aged 32 with 5 children under 12 and another on the way. She also takes over the Green Grocer business.
17th March 1887 Elias buried at Lower Ince Cemetry in same grave as daughter Jane and son Edward.
18th March 1887 Wigan Examiner has a lengthy report on the inquest into Elias’s death. “died […] from injuries received in a trap collision at Ivy Brow, Aspull”. Ivy Brow is now called Wigan Road and runs from the Leeds And Liverpool Canal Bridge and the Colliers Arms pub to Higher Lane, it is a steep road. “Nixon and a fishdealer named Hasleden, of Schofield Lane, had been out for a drive, and when coming down Ivy Brow, near the quarry, they ran into a hansom belonging to Mrs Hurst Ship Inn Wigan, which was conveying home Mr and Mrs Barton [no relation]” “Hasleden was conveyed home in a trap […] Nixon was taken as far as Greenough Street by the hansom […]. From Greenough Street Nixon walked home, but it seems that in the fall he received some injuries to the head, and although medical assistance was summoned he died”. Elizabeth gave evidence at the inquest “He came home about five minutes past ten […] He seemed ill and looked as if he had been tumbling. I asked him what he had been doing and he said he did not know. […] He scratched the door like a child knocking and when I went to the door he was alone. […] He slept middling in the night but whatever I asked him he said ‘Oh my head’. He was no different in the morning and when I asked him what he had been doing he still said he did not know.” Hasleden also gave evidence “I met with the deceased on Thursday opposite the Shovel And Broom Scholes […]. The deceased and I went out for a drive in my gig. I started at the Bold Arms and picked him up at Clarington Brook. We went through Hindley to the Four Gates public house Westhoughton. […] went on twoards home by way of Dicconson Lane and Aspull Moor. […] The last place we stopped at was The Five Gates. The deceased was driving. I don’t remember anything after we passed Dicconson Lane Station. I don’t know whether I fell asleep or it was the stuff I had taken. […] The deceased had not had as much drink as I had. He was perfectly sober”. James Hurst son of Mrs Hurst gave evidence “[…] I was driving a hansom cab belonging to my mother […] I was walking the horse up the hill […] there were no lights on the other trap. They pitched into my cab and the wheels got locked […] I saw two men pitched out of the trap […] we found them lying on the side of the road unconscious”. A John Prescott, who had taken Elias back to Scholes Wigan after the accident, also gave evidence “After the accident I could see the [Hasleden and Nixon] were both drunk”. The jury passed a verdict of “Accidental Death”.
4th November 1887 Son Herman born posthumously at 71 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan. Herman has 2 middle names which must have been unusual at the time. Elias’s occupation is given as Hawker, so maybe there was no Grocer shop?

1887 To 1891 Family moves to 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan which is close to Warrington Lane and Harrogate Street Central Wigan.
5th April 1891 Census. Family living at 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. Elizabeth is aged 36 a Grocer, daughter Elizabeth is aged 15, son Thomas is aged 10, son Alfred is aged 8, daughter Lily is aged 5 and son Herman is aged 3.
10th October 1893 Daughter Elizabeth dies aged 17 at 87 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan of Typhoid Fever (duration 1 month). Informant was an uncle James Johnson of 169 Whelley Wigan who was also present at the death.
12th October 1893 Daughter Elizabeth buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in same grave as Elias and her siblings. Deathplace on burial record is 87 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan, so maybe one of address is a mistake or the family were using both addresses.
31st March 1901 Census. Family living at 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. Elizabeth is aged 46 a Shop Keeper Grocer, son Thomas is aged 20 a Shop Assistant Grocer, son Alfred is aged 18 a Post Man for Post Office, daughter Lily is aged 15 and son Herman is aged 14.
14th March 1905 Two hams stolen from Grocery shop as later reported by Wigan Observer. “Thomas Nixon said he saw the hams hanging in the doorway of the shop quarter of an hour before they were stolen”, three men were seen throwing the hams into the doorway of the Foundry pub. Only one of the men was convicted.
2nd April 1911 Census. Family living at 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. Elizabeth is aged 56 a Shopkeeper, son Thomas is aged 30 an Assistant Grocer, son Alfred is aged 28 a Postman, daughter Lily is aged 25 a Clothier’s Clerk and son Herman is aged 23 (no occupation given).
4th June 1911 Son Thomas marries Margaret Jones at St Catherine Scholes Wigan. Thomas is aged 30 a Grocer living at 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan and Margaret is aged 30 living at 12 Neville Street Scholes Wigan. Daughter Lily is a witness.
1914 To 1918 No World War One service history can be found for Herman.
12th December 1915 Son Alfred enlists in Manchester Regiment aged 33.
2nd January 1916 Son Herman marries Josephine Gertrude Smith at All Saints Hindley. Herman is aged 28 a Bookkeeper from Wigan and Josephine is aged 24 from 90 Ladies Lane Hindley.
21st March 1916 Son Alfred examined for an Invaliding Disability, but the cause cannot be determined from his service records, although there are later mentions of Malaria. It is probable that he switched to the Royal Defense Corps at this stage.
18th March 1918 Daughter Lily dies aged 32 at 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan of Acute Bronchitis. Informant was son Thomas of 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan.
29th September 1919 Son Alfred discharged from Army.
19th June 1921 Census. Elizabeth and son Alfred living at 84 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. Elizabeth is aged 66 a Retail Grocer and son Alfred is aged 37 a Grocers Assistant working for Elizabeth at 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. Son Thomas was living with his family at 82 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan and working for Elizabeth as a Grocers Manager at 86 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan. The Nixon family therefore occupying 3 adjacent houses in Darlington Street Scholes Wigan, 86 was the Grocer business, Elizabeth and son Alfred living at 84 and son Thomas living at 82.
27th February 1931 Elizabeth dies aged 76 at 84 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan of Bronchitis. Son Thomas is the Informant and was present at the death. In the death certificate his address is given as 84 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan which could be a mistake or maybe he had moved into Elizabeth’s house.
4th March 1931 Elizabeth buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in same grave as Elias and their children.
28th March 1931 Elizabeth’s probate granted, she left £227k in today’s money to her remaining sons.
1st June 1935 Son Thomas dies aged 54 at 82 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan so he was still living there.
1935 To 1939 Grocers business probably wound up.
3rd January 1936 Son Herman dies aged 48.
29th September 1939 Register. Son Alfred aged 56 living at 84 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan recorded as a Retired Grocers Assistant.
11th November 1959 Son Alfred dies age 77 at 75 Frog Lane Springfield Wigan of Cerebral Arterio Sclerosis. That is the address of Wigan Workhouse which had become a general infirmary by this date. Alfred had been a Cinema Commissionaire after the Grocery had closed. His address is still 84 Darlington Street Scholes Wigan he had lived in Darlington Street for around 70 years. Informant was his brother Herman’s son Raymond Smith Nixon who was present at the death.
13th November 1959 Son Alfred buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in the neighbouring grave to his parents and siblings.
