Overview
Thomas Mawdsley was born in 1882 in Wallgate Wigan the son of Provision Dealer. Florence Edith Blackburn was born in 1884 in Rochdale the daughter of a Salesman. The were married in 1920 in Birkdale Southport. Thomas was a Jam Manufacturer and they lived in Southport. They had one who carried the Mawdsley name to the present day. Thomas died in 1955 aged 72 and Florence died in 1968 aged 84.

13th June 1882 Thomas born at 43 Princess Street Wallgate Wigan to John and Mary Mawdsley, a Provision Dealer.
1882 to 1884 Henry’s father John establishes the Jam Manufacturing business.
5th November 1884 Florence born at Harbour Terrace Rochdale to Edward and Ann Blackburn, a Salesman.
1891 to 1893 Henry moves from Princess Street Wallgate Wigan to Southport aged 9 to 11.
1901 In Census Thomas is recorded as an Assistant Jam Manufacturer aged 18, presumably with his father John and brother Henry at Mawdsley’s Jams.
1911 In Census Thomas is recorded as a Commercial Traveller aged 28, possibly for his father John at Mawdsley’s Jams. Thomas’s older brother Henry is an Assistant At Jam Works and younger brother Richard is also a Commercial Traveller, possibly for Mawdsley’s Jams.
1914 to 1917 A Royal Navy documents exists for Thomas which documents his “Engagement To RAF” on 3rd December 1917 (aged 35) so presumably he held some position in the Royal Navy until then. Note that the RAF was not formed until 1st April 1918 so the notes about RAF in to document were probably added later.
3rd December 1917 The Royal Navy document records that he served in ships after the date of engagement to the RAF so maybe his role involved aircraft based on Royal Navy ships. A RAF document records that from 3rd December 1917 Thomas was an Air Mechanic II (D), but the “date of effect” is 1st April 1918 which matches the first establishment of the RAF, maybe before that Thomas was part of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS).
10th January 1919 Thomas’s father John dies on train from Wigan to Southport.
15th or 22nd January 1919 Thomas’s father John buried at Duke Street Cemetery Southport. Thomas does not attend due to being “In France”.
19th February 1919 Thomas gets a promotion within the RAF. In the RAF document it is stated that Thomas is 5 Feet 8 Inches, Brown hair, Brown Eyes and Fresh complexion and his civilian occupation was Jam Manufacturer.
26th March 1919 Thomas is transferred to RAF Reserve.
30th April 1920 Thomas is discharged from RAF.
30th June 1920 Thomas and Florence married at St James Birkdale Southport. Thomas is aged 38 a Jam Manufacturer living at The Palace Hotel Birkdale Southport, Florence is aged 35 living at 10 Walmer Road Birkdale Southport, her father Edward is recorded as a Gentleman. Thomas’s brother Evan is a witness.
17th July 1920 Thomas’s brother John marries Mary Emma Stewart at St Philip Southport.
19th June 1921 Census. Thomas and Florence living at 30 Rawlinson Road Southport. Thomas is aged 39 a Jam Manufacturer working in Princess Street Wallgate Wigan and Florence is aged 36.
2nd May 1924 Son Frank born at 30 Rawlinson Road Southport. Thomas is a Jam Manufacturer aged 42 and Florence is aged 39 which would be quite old for a first child at that time.
10th October 1931 Thomas’s mother Mary dies aged 80 at 18 Ash Street Southport.
29th September 1939 Register. Family living at 30 Rawlinson Road Southport. Thomas is a Jam Manufacturer aged 57, Florence is aged 53 and Frank is aged 14.
2nd June 1944 Thomas’s Brother Henry dies aged 63 in Southport. He was still a working Jam Manufacturer so Thomas is presumably solely in charge of Mawdsleys Jam from this point forwards.
1945 to 1953 Son Frank starts work as a Jam Manufacturer, presumably at Mawdsleys Jam.
19th September 1953 Son Frank marries Barbara Goodwin at Christ Church Eccleston St Helens. Frank is aged 29 a Jam Manufacturer from 30 Rawlinson Road Southport and Barbara is aged 23 from 29 Old Lane Eccleston St Helens.
7th February 1955 Thomas dies aged 72 at Cheadle Royal Hospital of Mycardial Failure. He is a Jam Manufacturer, certificate does not say retired so he must still have been working. Informant was his brother Evan of 29 Cowdray Road Southport. Presumably from this point son Frank takes over running of Mawdsleys Jam.
23rd April 1955 Thomas’s probate is granted leaving £892k to Florence, son Frank and brother Evan.
12th May 1959 Thomas’s brother John dies aged 70 in Southport.
30th May 1960 Thomas’s brother Evan dies aged 67 in Southport.
3rd August 1961 Thomas’s sister Sarah dies aged 74 in Southport.
5th September 1964 Thomas’s brother James dies in Southport.
6th December 1968 Florence dies aged 84 at Ormskirk District General Hospital of Cancer. Her residence is 30 Rawlinson Road Southport where she had lived for 47 years. Informant is son Frank who lives at 30 Rawlinson Road Southport.
