4th August 1884 Richard born at 43 Princess Street Wallgate Wigan to John and Mary Mawdsley a Jam Manufacturer.
1891 to 1893 Henry moves from Princess Street Wallgate Wigan to Southport aged 5 to 7.
1911 In Census Richard is recorded as a Commercial Traveller aged 26, possibly for Mawdsley’s Jams. Brother Thomas is also recorded as a Commercial Traveller aged 28. Richard’s older brother Henry is an Assistant At Jam Works presumably at Mawdsley’s Jams.
29th April 1914 Richard and Sarah married at Holy Trinity Southport. Richard is aged 29 of 18 Ash Street Southport an Agent (possibly for Mawdsley’s Jams) and Sarah is aged 29 of 437 Lord Street Southport, her dead father was a Shipping Agent. Probable best man is a “M Mawdsley”.
1914 to 1915 Richard and Sarah move to Parbold.
1914 to 1915 Richard probably becomes a director of Mawdsleys Jam aged 30 as his occupation becomes Jam Manufacturer by birth of daughter in 1915.
27th January 1915 Daughter Margaret Jean Mawdsley born at Silverdale Common Lane Parbold. Richard is a Jam Manufacturer and his residence is the same as the birthplace.
21st April 1915 Daughter Margaret baptised at Christ Church Parbold.
1914 to 1918 There is a record of a First World War medal for a Richard Charles Mawdsley of the Royal Army Service Corps but no qualifying information is present so it is not definite that it is our Richard. No other service records can be found.
10th January 1919 Richard’s father John dies on train from Wigan to Southport.
15th or 22nd January 1919 Richard’s father John buried at Duke Street Cemetery Southport. Richard does not attend due to being “In France” so he must have been in the armed forces at that time.
19th June 1921 Census. Family living at Common Lane Parbold. Richard is aged 36 a Jam Manufacturer for Mawdsleys Jam in Princess Street Wallgate Wigan, Sarah is aged 36 and Margaret is aged 6. They have a live in servant Lucy Ellson aged 22.
1921 to 1939 Richard moves to London alone and works as a Clerk. Sarah becomes a Paid Housekeeper. Possibly a marriage breakdown.
10th October 1931 Thomas’s mother Mary dies aged 80 at 18 Ash Street Southport.
29th September 1939 Register. Sarah is living at 435-7 Lord Street Southport making a living as a “Paid House Keeper”, with Margaret aged 24. Also living there are Sarah’s possible relative William F Butterwork (born 1873) and Robert and Jane Fairhurst. Maybe the property was owned by the Sarah’s brother or by the Fairhursts and Sarah was the housekeeper. Sarah’s brother and the Fairhursts were all in the Millinery trade. Richard is living at 15 St Mark’s Crescent Chalk Farm London working as a Clerk, maybe there was some marriage breakdown between 1921 and 1939 and Richard left Mawdsleys Jam at the same time.
14th September 1940 Daughter Margaret marries Bryan Magill Young at Christchurch Southport. Bryan is aged 28 an Engineer from 113 Liverpool Road Birkdale Southport and Margaret is aged 25 a Milliner from 437 Lord Street Southport. Occupation of Richard is given as Government Officer, maybe he was a civil servant clerk. Bryan and Margaret has 3 children and lived in Southport. Bryan died in 1974 and sometime later Margaret married Stanley J Berney. Margaret died on 28th January 2011 aged 96 at Springfield Court Nursing Home Aughton Ormskirk of Lung Cancer.
24th June 1966 Sarah dies aged 82 at Haydock Lodge Haydock of Cerbral Softening. Richard’s occupation is given as Civil Servant. Informant is a R N Jenkinson described as “Occupier” of Haydock Lodge so maybe it was a care home. In Sarah’s Probate her residence is given as 3 Rotten Row Southport and the beneficiary is Richard a retired Civil Servant.
22nd September 1972 Richard dies aged 88 at 52 Friern Barnet Road Friern Barnet (also his residence) of Bronchopneumonia. Informant was a James Wright with Qualification “causing the body to be cremated” so probably an undertaker. That address is the address of Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum which was an asylum until 1993. There is no information as to why Richard was there or for how long. In Richard’s probate his residence is given as Friern Lunatic Asylum.
