31st May 1845 Evan born in Skelmersdale to Henry and Ellen Mawdsley, Henry is a Labourer.
1845 to 1847 Evan’s parents move to Wallgate Wigan with some of their children, including Evan.
12th January 1848 Jenet born in Shaw Oldham to Peter and Tryphena Hart, Peter is a Policeman (“late druggist and grocer” according to baptism record). Jenet is the name on the Birth Certificate although Janet and Jennett are used on subsequent records.
1847 to 1848 Evan’s father Henry becomes a Shopkeeper.
1861 to 1868 Evan starts work as an Iron Moulder.
20th October 1862 Evan’s father Henry dies at 43 Princess Street Wallgate aged 57. Evan is aged 17. Evan’s brother John takes over Provision Dealer business.
6th July 1866 Ellen born in Scot Lane Blackrod to Thomas and Ellen Crook, Thomas is a Coal Miner.
1st August 1868 Evan and Jenet married at Blackrod. Evan is aged 23 an Iron Moulder from Wigan and Jenet is aged 21 from Blackrod and had been a Power Loom Weaver (from Lawrence Lowe). Jenet’s father Peter is a Pointsman by this time.
1868 to 1871 Evan becomes a Publican at Corporation Inn Poolstock Wigan. This is a photo of Evan (from the collection of Karen Humphreys).
2nd April 1871 Census. Evan and Jenet living at Corporation Inn Poolstock Wigan. Evan is aged 26 an Innkeeper and Cowkeeper and Jenet is aged 23. A servant also lives there Catherine Ormesher aged 15.
4th December 1871 Daughter Ellen born at Corporation Inn Poolstock Wigan.
17th December 1871 Daughter Ellen baptised at St Thomas Wallgate Wigan (both Evan’s parents and Jenet’s parents were living near there).
5th May 1873 Son Thomas born at Corporation Inn Poolstock Wigan.
19th May 1873 Son Thomas baptised at Wigan Parish Church.
27th June 1873 Son Thomas dies aged 1 month at Corporation Inn Poolstock Wigan of Jaundice. Informant was Jenet’s mother Tryphena Hart who was living at 1 Green Street Wallgate Wigan who was also present at the death.

1874 Family move to Bowling Green Inn Swinley Wigan (and Corporation Inn Poolstock Wigan is taken over by Edward Barton, the husband of Evan’s sister Anne).

8th September 1874 Son Henry dies aged 1 month at Bowling Green Inn Swinley Wigan of Gastritis (7 days duration). Jenet was present at the death.
10th September 1874 Son Henry buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in same grave as brother Thomas.

3rd April 1881 Census. Family living at Vine Inn Wallgate Wigan. Evan is aged 35 a Publican, Jenet is aged 33 a “Publican Wife”, daughter Ellen is aged 8, son Evan is aged 3 and daughter Tryphena is aged 2. Also living there is Jenet’s mother Tryphena Pembley aged 62 who must have remarried. A servant Alice Catterall aged 15 is also living there.
1883 Family move to Fleece Hotel Central Wigan.
10th March 1883 Evan takes out a paragraph in Wigan Observer stating he “Begs to intimate to his friends and the public generally that he has taken the above Hotel […] and hopes, by always keeping in stock the best quality of wines, spirits and beer, to meet with a fair share of public patronage”.
4th May 1878 Wigan Observe reports transfer of Licence for Fleece Hotel Central Wigan to Evan.
4th June 1883 Daughter Ellen dies aged 11 at Fleece Hotel Central Wigan of Tuberculosis.
7th June 1883 Daughter Ellen buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in same grave as siblings Thomas, Henry and Margaret. Evan and Jenet had lost 4 out of 6 children in the previous 10 years.
16th October 1889 Jenet dies aged 41 at Fleece Hotel Central Wigan of Typhoid Fever (duration 17 days). Informant was Jenet’s brother Thomas Hart who was present at the death. Evan is aged 44.
12th March 1891 Evan and Ellen married at Wigan Register Office. Evan is aged 46 a Licensed Victualler at Fleece Hotel Central Wigan and Ellen is aged 24 a Domestic Servant at Evan’s pub. Probable best man is Richard Fairhurst probably husband of Evans’ sister Mary, who was also a witness. This is a photo of Ellen (from the collection of Karen Humphreys).
5th April 1891 Census. Family living at Fleece Hotel Central Wigan. Evan is aged 46 and a Licensed Victualler, Ellen is aged 24, son Evan is aged 13 (educated at Blackrod And Rivington Grammar School, according to Lawrence Lowe). Daughter Tryphena is aged 12 living at 4 Alexander Road Ormskirk described as a Boarder, head of the house is a Cicely Layland aged 39 described as a Company House Keeper, maybe Tryphena was at school in Ormskirk. Also living at Fleece Hotel Central Wigan were Henry Fairhurst aged 25 a Nephew (probably the son of Evan’s sister Mary), and four servants: Annie Coleman aged 22, Charlotte Coleman aged 18, Mary E Fairclough aged 17 and Edward Fox aged 12.

4th December 1892 Son Henry baptised at Wigan Parish Church. Baptism transcript says residence is 7 Hallgate which is across the road from Fleece Hotel Central Wigan so is probably an error.
26th July 1894 Daughter Janet born at 7 Market Street Central Wigan (probably address of Fleece Hotel Central Wigan).
13th August 1894 Daughter Janet baptised at Wigan Parish Church.
23rd December 1895 Daughter Clarissa born at 7 Market Street Central Wigan (probably address of Fleece Hotel Central Wigan).
12th January 1896 Daughter Clarissa baptised at Wigan Parish Church.
25th December 1897 Daughter Christina born at 7 Market Street Central Wigan (probably address of Fleece Hotel Central Wigan).
4th August 1900 Wigan Examiner reports on an “jovial outing” of The Order Of Druids Friendly Society when Evan was “picked up on the way”.
Photo said to be of Tryphena with a younger boy, if it is a brother then could only be Henry in latter end of 1890s (from Amanda Lowe)
26th December 1900 Daughter Tryphena goes missing after returning home from a private party on Christmas night.
11th January 1901 Wigan Examiner reports “All efforts to trace the whereabouts of Tryphena […] have proved fruitless. It is feared some mishap may have befallen her. […] The fact that she was in a delicate state of health when she left home renders the case more painful”. Could she have been pregnant? A later report from Wigan Examiner states Tryphena “had been in delicate health for some time past” so probably not.
15th January 1901 Body of Tryphena found at Top Lock New Springs Wigan (which is several miles from Fleece Hotel Central Wigan). Following from Wigan Observer on the 16th “The sudden disappearance of Miss Mawdsley on the morning following Christmas Day caused somewhat of a sensation in the town, and her parents and friends were in great trouble, in their ignorance to her whereabouts. The police was ultimately communicated with and handbills giving a description of her were sent round almost every town in England to the hope of finding a clue to her disappearance, but every effort failed until a passing boat on its way through the lock stated, between ten and eleven o’clock on Tuesday morning, in churning the water brought a body to the surface, which was identified as that of the missing girl. On being taken out the water, the body was taken to to Top Lock Inn, Aspull, where it awaits the coroner’s inquiry. It is a remarkable circumstance considering the length of time that the body has most probably been in the water, for the girl has been missing for three weeks, that there are no marks to be found upon it. On the fact that the deceased had been found becoming known in Wigan, the Fleece Inn, her home, closed to the public”.
17th January 1901 Inquiry into Tryphena’s death held at Top Lock Inn New Springs (Top Lock Inn has now been demolished, see this chat on Wigan World). This from Wigan Examiner “Evan Mawdsley, father of the deceased and Mrs Mawdsley, the stepmother, gave evidence to the effect that the deceased returned home from a private party on Christmas night, and after she retired to her bedroom, she was not seen alive again, the body being discovered on Tuesday by a lock keeper in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Haigh. The parents stated that there was no reason to suppose the deceased had any cause to be dissatisfied with her life. The lockkeeper deposed to finding the body in the canal on Tuesday morning. Police Constable Johnson gave evidence as to receiving information that the deceased had been found in the canal and to removing her from the water to the Top Lock Inn. The jury, after hearing all the evidence, returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased had been ‘found drowned’, but how or when the deceased got into the water there was no evidence to show”. Now known as an Open Verdict. Wigan Examiner also reported “Miss Mawdsley was only 22 years of age, and had been in delicate health for some time past”. The Wigan Observer adds Tryphena “was well known in the Wigan district”. This photo includes the top lock itself and the Top Lock Inn, maybe from a few decades later.
18th January 1901 Daughter Tryphena buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in the same grave as her mother and siblings. Wigan Examiner reports that 26 wreaths were sent, and there were 5 carriages: first containing Evan and Ellen plus son Evan and daughter Ellen; second containing Mr and Mrs Richard Fairhurst senior (Evan’s sister Mary and husband) and a Miss Barton; third containing Mrs Hall (Evan’s sister Ellen) and daughter; fourth containing three Fairhurst brothers, plus Henry Barton (son of Evan’s brother Thomas) and Edward Barton (possibly another son of Evan’s brother Thomas); fifth containing Mr Richard Fairhurst junior (son of Evan’s sister Mary?) and some young ladies (maybe friends of Tryphena?). Wigan Examiner also states “The coffin, which was of oak and brass fittings, bore a plate on which was engraved ‘Tryphena Mawdsley, died December 26th 1899 (sic) aged 22 years’”.
31st March 1901 Census. Family living at Fleece Hotel Central Wigan. Evan is aged 55, Ellen is aged 35, son Evan is aged 23 a Chartered Acccountant Articled Clerk, daughter Ellen is aged 9, son Henry is aged 8, daughter Janet is aged 6, daughter Clarissa is aged 5 and daughter Christina is aged 3. 9th November 1901 Daughter Christina dies aged 3 at Fleece Hotel Central Wigan of Broncho Pneumonia.
12th November 1901 Daughter Christina buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in same grave as Jenet and her half-siblings.
1901 to 1904 Son Evan becomes an Accountant and moves to London.
31st August 1904 Wigan Observer reports that Licence of Station Hotel Orrell has transferred from Evan Mawdsley to Evan Mawdsley Junior.
17th September 1904 Son Evan marries Mary Eleanor Taylor at St Mark Newtown Wigan. Son Evan is aged 27 an Accountant living at 22 Peckham Road Camberwell London and Mary is aged 21 living at Mitchell Street Newtown Wigan working as a Tailoress according to Lawrence Lowe.
30th September 1904 Wigan Examiner reports on a “Voter List” being objected to by the Liberal Party, one of the objections is to Evan Mawdsley of Fleece Hotel Central Wigan. The following questions and answers were reported “Q: When did you leave this house? A: I have never left it Q: But you are living at Orrell now? A: Occasionally. I am backwards and forwards”. Evan must have taken out some kind of licence for Station Hotel Orrell.
17th May 1905 Ellen dies aged 38 at Fleece Hotel Central Wigan of Pneumonia. Her sister Margaret Barton of 668 Chorley Road Westhoughton is informant and present at the death.
20th May 1905 Ellen buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in different grave from Evan, her step-children and her own daughter Christina.
27th May 1905 Wigan Examiner reports that Evan has relinquished the licence for Station Hotel Orrell.
1905 to 1906 Son Evan and wife Mary move back from London to Wigan and take over running of Fleece Hotel Central Wigan. Maybe something to do with Ellen dying?
9th November 1906 Son Evan’s daughter Tryphena born at Fleece Hotel Central Wigan, son Evan is a Licensed Victualler living there.
23rd November 1907 Wigan Examiner reports that Licence for Fleece Hotel Central Wigan is transfered from Evan to a Thomas Green. Whether this is Evan or son Evan is unclear.
1907 Evan retires from being a publican and possibly moves to Coppull with remaining children Ellen, Henry, Janet and Clarissa. This is young Janet (from Lawrence Lowe)
27th February 1911 Evan dies aged 65 at 7 Holland Street Coppull of Hepatitis Cirrhosis (which could be related to alcoholism). He is a Retired Publican. Informant was his son Henry who also lived at 7 Holland Street Coppull and was present at the death.
3rd March 1911 Evan is buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in same grave as Jenet, their dead children and Ellen’s daughter Christina.
30th March 1911 Evan’s probate is granted. He leaves £320k in modern day money to his brother John Mawdsley presumably in trust for his remaining children. These are photos of daughters Ellen and Janet (both from Lawrence Lowe)
2nd April 1911 Census. There is an Ellen Mawdsley aged 20 working as a Domestic Servant at Skippool Road Poulton Le Fylde Blackpool for Joseph Waddington a Draper, but her birthplace is Coppull not Wigan, if this is her then maybe she had been living in Coppull with Evan and the Head of the household thought she had been born there, and maybe she was in Poulton Le Fylde to be with her sister Janet. Son Henry is aged 18 boarding in Park Road Coppull a Railway Clerk. Daughter Janet is aged 16 a Domestic Servant living at Moorland Avenue Poulton Le Fylde Blackpool working for William Shepherd a Commission Agent. Daughter Clarissa is aged 15 living with her brother Evan at 19 Studley Road Clapham.
1911 to 1921 Son Henry moves to London and becomes a Shipping Clerk.
1911 to 1921 Daughters Ellen, Janet and Clarissa move to Blackpool and establish a Boarding House which Ellen runs until 1935. This is a photo of the sisters presumably outside their boarding house (there is a poster in the window saying “Mawdsley”), caption says “Tryphena and Evan children and Mawdsley aunts who ran the boarding house” this probably means the children of Evan and Mary Mawdsley who were staying in Blackpool around 1922 (from Lawrence Lowe).
19th June 1921 Census. Son Henry is aged 28 a Shipping Clerk for Mr Gregor Gow & Holland at 4 Fenchurch Avenue City Of London (near the Lloyd’s building) boarding at 21 Studley Road Lambeth London. Daughters Ellen aged 30, Janet aged 26 and Clarissa aged 25 are Boarding House Keepers at 21 Vance Road Blackpool. Clarissa is marked as the Head. This is modern day 21 Vance Road Blackpool from Google Maps.
10th June 1922 Son Henry marries Roma Cynthia Swan at St Margaret Westminster. Henry is aged 29 a Clerk living at 21 Studley Road Clapham and Roma is aged 20 living at 38 Parliament Street Westminster (which is an extension of Whitehall). St Margaret Westmister is the church adjoining Westminster Abbey, see Wikipedia.
12th October 1922 Daughter Janet marries Samuel Speakman at All Saints Blackpool. Janet is aged 28 living at 49 Clinton Avenue Blackpool (which is a private house maybe the sisters were living there rather than at the Boarding House) and Samuel is aged 24 a Butcher living at 45 Bloomfield Road Blackpool. Janet is referred to as “Janet Hart Mawdsley” on the marriage certificate. Curiously Evan’s occupation is given as an Iron Moulder which he was before he became a Publican. Samuel and Janet lived in Blackpool where Samuel was a butcher, they had 2 children. Janet died aged 90 on 9th January 1985 at Rathbone Hospital Liverpool of Breast Cancer, she was living at 163 Gateacre Park Drive Liverpool, probably with her daughter. 7th October 1926 Daughter Clarissa marries Jonathan Dent Lowes at All Saints Blackpool. Clarissa is aged 30 living at 49 Clinton Avenue Blackpool (which is where sister Janet was living at time of her marriage) and Jonathan is aged 31 a Graveman also living at 49 Clinton Avenue Blackpool (maybe it was a lodging house?). Sister Janet’s husband Samuel was the probable best man and sister Ellen was a witness. Evan’s occupation is given as a Brass Moulder this time.
9th April 1927 Clarissa and Jonathan have a daughter Betty (so Clarissa was probably pregnant when she got married) the birth was at 21 Vance Road Blackpool so the boarding house was still being run, maybe by Ellen alone.
8th May 1927 Clarissa dies aged 31 at County Mental Hospital Lancaster of “Acute Confusional Insanity On Admission”, her residence is 21 Vance Road Blackpool. This is possibly a case of post natal depression.
11th September 1934 Clarissa’s husband Jonathan dies aged 39 of “Septicaemia Following Injury Working In Sewerage Output” (duration 2 weeks). He was still living at 21 Vance Road Blackpool. Clarissa and Jonathan’s daughter Betty has “Adopted” annotated on her birth certificate, it is unknown whether this is after her mother died or after her father died (probably after her mother died). No more information can be found about Betty.
2nd February 1935 Ellen dies aged 43 at Whittingham Mental Hospital Preston of Lobar Pneumonia. Her occupation was Company Housekeeper at 21 Vance Road Blackpool so the boarding house was still going. Informant was her brother Henry.
