Overview

(Note that this is an “external” family married into by Anne Barton that also happens to have the surname “Barton” but is part of a non-ancestral family tree. The family timeline is included here because it eventually links into the Henry Harold Harrison family site.)

Edward Barton was born in 1839 to a farmer from Broughton near Preston. Anne Barton was born in 1840 to an unmarried Weaver from Skelmersdale. Edward and Anne were married in 1861 at St Thomas Wallgate WIgan, had 7 children and lived in Poolstock where Edward was an Iron Moulder. Edward died in 1904 and Anne in 1913.

Timeline

19th September 1839 Edward Barton is born in Broughton near Preston to Henry Barton and Elizabeth Swarbrick. Henry is a Farmer.

5th July 1840 Anne Barton is baptised at St Thomas The Martyr Upholland with mother Ellen Barton from Skelmersdale, no father is recorded but is presumed to be Henry Mawsdley due to later circumstantial evidence.

6th June 1841 Census. Anne is aged 1 and living with mother Ellen aged 25, grandfather John Barton aged 65 and brother Thomas Barton aged 5 at Grimshaw Skelmersdale in a cottage by the delf where John worked.

3rd November 1844 Anne’s mother Ellen marries Henry Mawdsley, Anne retains Barton surname but is sometimes recorded as Anne Mawdsley.

1845 to 1847 Henry and Ellen with children move to Wallgate Wigan.

30th March 1851 Census. Anne aged 10 is living in Occleshaw Yard Wallgate with parents Henry and Ellen and 4 siblings born after Henry and Ellen’s marriage. Anne is recorded as “Ann Mawdsley”. Anne’s two siblings Thomas and John, also born before Henry and Ellen’s marriage, are living in the country.

7th April 1861 Census. Anne aged 20 is living at 43 Princess Street Wallgate with parents Henry and Ellen and 4 siblings born after Henry and Ellen’s marriage. Anne is recorded as “Ann Mawdesley”. Anne’s two siblings Thomas and John, born before Henry and Ellen’s marriage, are living in Orrell House Farm Orrell.

8th July 1861 Anne marries Edward Barton at St Thomas Wallgate. Anne is aged 21 of Princess Street Wallgate and Edward is aged 21 a Moulder from Ince Wigan. Henry Mawdsley is recorded as Anne’s father.

1861 to 1863 Anne and Edward move into 43 Princess Street Wallgate with Anne’s parents.

20th October 1862 Anne’s father Henry dies at 43 Princess Street Wallgate

20th October 1863 Daughter Alice born at 43 Princess Street Wallgate. Edward is an Iron Moulder. Anne’s mother Ellen is the informant on the birth certificate.

1st November 1863 Daughter Alice baptised at St Thomas Wallgate.

3rd July 1865 Daughter Ellen born at 43 Princess Street Wallgate. Edward is an Iron Moulder.

1865 to 1867 Family move to Newtown.

21st August 1867 Son Henry born at 15 Douglas Street Newtown Wigan. Edward is an Iron Moulder.

13th December 1869 Son John born at Douglas Street Newtown Wigan. Edward is an Iron Moulder.

2nd April 1871 Census. Family is living in Douglas Street Newtown Wigan. Edward is an Iron Moulder aged 31 and Anne is aged 30. Daughter Alice is aged 7, daughter Ellen is aged 5, son Henry is aged 3 and son John is aged 1. They have a servant Jane Banks aged 18.

17th March 1872 Daughter Annie born at 25 Douglas Street Newtown Wigan. Edward is an Iron Moulder.

1873 Edward becomes an Inn Keeper at Corporation Inn Poolstock Wigan which had previously been run by Anne’s brother Evan Mawdsley.

26th November 1873 Son Richard is born at Corporation Inn Poolstock Wigan where Edward is an Inn Keeper.

8th August 1877 Daughter Margaret Edith is born at Corporation Inn Poolstock Wigan Wigan where Edward is an Inn Keeper.

1877 to 1881 Edward goes back to being an Iron Moulder and the family moves to 20 Harrogate Street Central Wigan an address linked to Anne’s brother Thomas Barton so maybe they got that house via that connection (Thomas died in 1880).

3rd April 1881 Census. Family living at 20 Harrogate Street Central Wigan. Edward is an Iron Moulder aged 41 and Anne is aged 40. Daughter Alice is a Cotton Factory Operative aged 17, Ellen is a Cotton Factory Operative aged 15, son Henry is aged 13, son John is aged 11, daughter Annie is aged 9, son Richard is aged 8 and daughter Margaret Edith is aged 3. Census indicates that Edward was born in Barton which is likely to mean the village of Barton just north of Broughton, the Henry Harold Harrison family site states that Edward’s Barton family originated in the Barton near Broughton.

1881 to 1885 Family possibly moves back to Princess Street Wallgate.

27th June 1885 Daughter Alice marries Henry Harrison at St Thomas Wallgate. Henry is aged 25 whose profession is unclear but could be Engine Minder or Maker, living in Pool Street Poolstock Wigan. Alice is aged 22 living in Princess Street Wallgate (possibly with rest of family or could be on her own). Edward is an Iron Moulder.

1885 to 1891 Edward goes missing and Anne moves to Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan and becomes a Grocer (possibly helped by her brother John Mawdsley?). Edward is rumoured to have emigrated to New York, though no outgoing passenger list documentation can be found. This is a photo of him in New York from the Henry Harold Harrison family page.

29th October 1890 Son Henry marries Hannah Balderson at St Catherine Scholes Wigan. Henry is an Iron Moulder aged 23 living in Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan and Hannah is aged 22 from Poolstock Wigan. Edward is an Iron Moulder. Henry and Hannah live in Poolstock Wigan and have 7 children. Henry dies on 2nd December 1943 aged 76 of Tonsil Cancer.

5th April 1891 Census. Anne and four children are living at 90 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan. Anne is the “Head” and there is no mention of Edward though Anne records her status as “Married”. Anne is aged 50 and is a Grocer. Daughter Ellen is aged 25 and “living on own means”, son John is aged 22 and a Baker, son Richard is aged 17 and a Moulders Apprentice and daughter Margaret Edith is aged 13. Daughter Annie is living with her sister Alice at Honeysuckle Inn Poolstock Wigan working as a General Servant. No further information can be found about Richard after this date. 20th January 1892 Daughter Annie marries Thomas Thompson at St Catherine Scholes Wigan. Annie is aged 19 living at 90 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan, Thomas is a Coal Miner aged 23 living at 76 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan. Edward is recorded as father. Annie and Thomas live in Wallgate Wigan and have 6 children. Annies dies on 18th December 1920 aged 48 of Bronchitis.

23rd March 1892 Daughter Ellen marries William Charles Davies at at St Catherine Scholes Wigan. Ellen is aged 26 living at 90 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan, William is aged 23 a Fitter living at 76 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan (the same address as Thomas Thompson, maybe they were boarders together who married two sisters?). Ellen and William lived in Blackpool where William was a Watchman and have 7 children. Ellen dies on 1st April 1926 aged 60 of Cardiac Failure.

1892 to 1901 Anne moves to Pottery Street Wallgate Wigan.

19th August 1893 Edward Barton, a married Moulder aged 52 (actually 53) arrives in Liverpool on the ship Umbria from New York.

24th August 1897 Daughter Alice dies aged 33 of Cirrhosis Of Liver at Honeysuckle Inn Poolstock Wigan where her husband Henry Harrison was the Publican.

26th August 1897 Daughter Alice buried at Lower Ince Cemetery Wigan.

31st March 1901 Census. Anne is living at 22 Pottery Street Wallgate Wigan as the Head of the household and is also recorded as being a Widow even though Edward is still alive. Daughter Margaret Edith is living with Anne aged 24 and a Confectioners Sugar Boiler. Also living with Anne are daughter Margaret Edith’s two children (born before Margaret Edith’s marriage) Annie Barton aged 4 and Edward Barton aged 1. Edward is boarding at 69 Byrom Street Goose Green Wigan with his daughter Annie and her husband Thomas Thompson, he is aged 61 a Retired Iron Moulder born in Preston.

3rd August 1901 Daughter Margaret Edith marries James Hilton at Wigan Register Office. Margaret Edit is aged 23 a Packer At A Jam Works (could it be Mawdsley’s Jam owned by her mother Anne’s brother John Mawdsley?) living at 22 Pottery Street Wallgate Wigan and James is aged 27 a Coal Miner living at 21 Marsh Green Pemberton Wigan. Margaret Edit already had 2 children before she married (presumably with James as the children lived with them subsequently) and was pregnant at the time of marriage, Margaret Edit and James had 7 children after they married. James continued as a Coal Miner and the family eventually moved to Sheffield. Margaret Edith died aged 94 of a Cerebral Haemorrhage in Killamarsh Sheffield. 18th June 1904 Edward dies aged 64 of Spinal Paralysis at 22 Pottery Street Wallgate Wigan which is Anne’s home, occupation given as Iron Moulder. Informant is a Ann McKnight of 69 Byrom Street Goose Green Wigan which is daughter Annie’s home, there is a James McKnight living at that address with Annie in 1901 census.

23rd June 1904 Edward buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in the grave of Anne’s sister Margaret Boardman who died in 1881.

26th March 1906 Son John dies aged 36 at 170 Warrington Road Ince Wigan of Acute Bronchitis, duration 2 days. He was a Master Bread Maker and was not married.

31st March 1906 Son John buried at Lower Ince Cemetery.

2nd April 1911 Census. Anne living at 22 Pottery Street Wallgate Wigan aged 70 with Margaret Edith, husband and family living with her, plus another family boarding.

1911 to 1913 Anne moves to Mason Street Wallgate Wigan.

29th November 1913 Anne dies aged 73 at 6 Mason Street Wallgate Wigan of Cerebral Haemorrhage. Informant is daughter Annie of 14 Mason Street Wallgate Wigan.

4th December 1913 Anne buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in same grave as Edward.
