(Note that this is part of an “external” family married into by Alice’s mother Anne Barton that also happened to have the surname “Barton” but is part of a non-ancestral family tree. The family timeline is included here because it links into the Henry Harold Harrison family site.)
Henry Harrison was born in 1860 in Blackrod to a Labourer at a Coal Miner. Alice Barton was born in 1863 in Wallgate Wigan to an Iron Moulder. Elizabeth Donahue was born in 1874 in Scholes Wigan to a Coal Miner. Henry and Alice were married in 1885 at St Thomas Wallgate Wigan, they had one child before Alice died in 1897. Henry and Elizabeth were married in 1900 and had 8 children. Henry died in 1937 and Elizabeth died in 1961.

27th March 1860 Henry Harrison born in Blackrod to Joseph and Ellen Harrison, Joseph is a Labourer in a Coal Mine.
20th October 1863 Alice Barton born at 43 Princess Street Wallgate Wigan to Edward and Anne Barton, Edward is an Iron Moulder.
11th June 1874 Elizabeth Donahue born at 15 Primrose Hill Scholes Wigan to Thomas and Ann Donahue, Thomas is a Coal Miner.
27th June 1885 Thomas and Alice marry at St Thomas Wallgate Wigan, Henry is aged 25 of Pool Street Poolstock Wigan occupation is unclear but is probably “Engine Minder” since that is his occupation in the birth certificate of his first son, Alice is aged 22 of Princess Street Wallgate (though she had lived elsewhere since she was born).
18th May 1886 Son Harold born at 20 Palmer Street Poolstock Wigan, Henry is an Engine Minder (someone who checks instruments on an inland waterway vessel according to Google).
15th October 1887 Wigan Examiner reports that the landlord of Honeysuckle Inn was charged with selling liquor outside of licensed hours. The landlord was Joseph Halliwell but a Henry Harrison was charged with aiding and abetting, this is possibly our Henry. Henry has some amusing statements to make about Jugged Hare. Case was dismissed.
1887 to 1890 Henry becomes a Publican and family move to Honeysuckle Inn Poolstock Wigan.
12th February 1890 Wigan Examiner reports that Henry was ordered to pay costs for having allowed his dog(s) to be unmuzzled at large. Report indicates that Henry is living at Honeysuckle Inn so is likely to be Landlord by this date.
5th April 1891 Census. Family living at Honeysuckle Inn Poolstock Wigan. Henry is a Licensed Victualler aged 31, Alice is aged 27 and Harold is aged 4. Three general servants were also living there including Alice’s two sisters Ellen Barton aged 25 and Annie Barton aged 18. 15th October 1892 Wigan Observer reports that Henry and Alice hosted a gathering of Colliery Engine Winders and their wives at Honeysuckle Inn Poolstock Wigan. The repast provided “reflects the highest credit on the catering abilities of Mr and Mrs Harrison”.
19th August 1893 Wigan Observer reports that Henry hosted an Engine Winder’s Bowling Match at his bowling green (some distance from the pub).
27th October 1894 Wigan Observer reports that Henry identified the body of his brother Edward who died of Rabies after having being bitten by a dog.
24th August 1897 Alice dies at Honeysuckle Inn Poolstock Wigan aged 33 of Cirrhosis of Liver (usually connected to alcoholism). Harold is aged 11.
26th August 1897 Alice buried at Lower Ince Cemetery.
2nd August 1899 Wigan Examiner reports that Henry was summoned for being drunk on his own premises on 27th July. The Chief Constable stated that Henry had been tee-total for some time and had “broken out” (fallen off the wagon presumably). Henry pleaded guilty and Chief Constable did not wish to pursure charges. Henry had been out with friends and had indulged too freely. This was first charge against him. Henry had to pay costs.
9th January 1900 Henry marries Elizabeth Donahue at St James Poolstock Wigan. Henry is an Inkeeper aged 39 living at Honeysuckle Inn Poolstock Wigan and Elizabeth is aged 25 living at 90 Pool Street Poolstock Wigan. Harold is aged 13.
31st March 1901 Census. Family living at Honeysuckle Inn Poolstock Wigan. Henry is a Publican aged 41, Elizabeth is aged 26 and Harold is aged 14, working as a Barman. A Barman and two Domestic Servants are also living there.
7th May 1902 Daughter Margaret born at Honeysuckle Inn Poolstock Wigan where Henry is a Licensed Victualler.
11th July 1902 Wigan Examiner reports that Henry was charged with being drunk in charge of a horse and cart in Market Place Central Wigan. Henry pleaded “guilty to a certain extent” and the Policeman said he was “swaying about disgracefully”. Fine of 10 shillings plus costs.
2nd August 1902 Wigan Observer reports members of the Honeysuckle bowling club gathered at Honeysuckle Inn Poolstock Wigan to show their respect for the outgoing host Henry, having been there for 15 years. A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close by singing the National Anthem.
1902 Henry ceases to be a Publican and becomes a Colliery Engine Winder still living in Poolstock Wigan. This from the Henry Harold Harrison family site about Henry’s time as a Publican (presumably from family members) “It is said that he would drink with his customers at breakfast, lunchtime, and dinner, sleeping off the alcohol between meals. When he would become too ill from drinking, the local doctor ‘would wean him off the booze with champagne’ It is also said that when he was drunk he could become abusive. He was a frequent gambler holding cock fights behind the Honeysuckle”, also this “His granddaughter believes he ‘gambled it away’”.
1902 This from Henry Harold Harrison family site “We understand from Harold’s daughter that Harold did not get on well with his father, who was a heavy drinker and may have been abusive. To escape the home environment, he moved out of the Honeysuckle when he was about age 16 and lived for a time with his grandfather, Joseph Harrison, who worked as an engineer at the Standish Pumping Station at Boar’s Head”.
13th September 1904 Daughter Nellie born at 90 Pool Street Poolstock Wigan. Henry is a Colliery Engine Winder.
30th July 1906 Son Joseph born at 90 Pool Street Poolstock Wigan. Henry is a Colliery Engine Winder.
22nd August 1907 Son Harold emigrates to Canada on ship Southwark from Liverpool heading for Quebec, aged 21 with occupation given as Labourer. On the documentation he is named Henry Harrison and subsequently seems to be referred to as Henry Harold Harrison. This from Henry Harold Harrison family site “When he completed his apprenticeship on his 21st birthday in 1907, Harold emigrated to Canada. He sailed from Liverpool to Quebec aboard the Southwark arriving on August 30, 1907. According to the Southwark passenger list Harold’s intended destination was Montreal. We believe his grandfather, Joseph, paid the passage. He brought to Canada a joiner’s tool chest made of balsa wood and his carpentry tools, some of which are still in the family’s possession. He took up work at mining camps in northern Ontario and Quebec”. He becomes a Carpenter and marries Agnes Durie living in Ontario and having 5 children. Harold dies on 12th November 1973 aged 87. He is the root ancestor of the Henry Harold Harrison family site from where these photos are lifted.


4th April 1909 Daughter Gladys born at 30 Tipping Street Poolstock Wigan. Henry is a Colliery Engine Winder.
28th November 1909 Daughter Gladys dies aged 7 months at 30 Tipping Street Poolstock Wigan of Whooping Cough, Broncho Pneumonia and Exhaustion.
5th October 1910 Daughter Annie born at 30 Tipping Street Poolstock Wigan. Henry is a Colliery Engine Winder.
1910 to 1915 Henry tries his hand at running his own business, first as a Shopkeeper then as a Restaurant Keeper, before returning to being a Colliery Engine Winder.
2nd April 1911 Census. Family living at 30 Tipping Street Poolstock Wigan. Henry is aged 51 acting as a Shopkeeper “Mixed Business Sweets etc”.
19th October 1912 Son Thomas born 30 Tipping Street Poolstock Wigan. Henry occupation is a Restaurant Keeper, since the informant was Henry himself this must be true.
12th July 1915 Son Edward born at 65 Byron Street Poolstock Wigan, Henry is a Colliery Engine Winder once more.
19th March 1918 Daughter Elizabeth born at 65 Byron Street Poolstock Wigan, Henry is a Colliery Engine Winder.
19th June 1921 Census. Family living at 65 Byron Street Poolstock Wigan. Henry is aged 61 recorded as an Invalid. Three working children are living at home.
30th October 1937 Henry dies aged 76 at Billinge Hospital of Senile Decay (now known as Dementia), home address was 88 Poolstock Wigan.
3rd November 1937 Henry buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in same grave as Alice.
25th April 1961 Elizabeth dies aged 86 at 75 Frog Lane Central Wigan (the old workhouse?) of Senile Decay (now known as Dementia), home address was 9 Chadwick Street Poolstock Wigan.
1st May 1961 Elizabeth buried at Lower Ince Cemetery in same grave as Henry and Alice.
