Overview

Norman Barton was born in 1907 the son of a Grocery Manager from Central Wigan. Marian Heaton was born in 1910 the daughter of a Railway Clerk from Garswood. They were married in Garswood in 1935 and lived in Orrell Post Wigan until the late 1980s. They had four children who all started their own families. Norman had his own Chartered Accountants business in Central Wigan. From the late 1980s they lived at Ecclesholme Care Home in Eccles Manchester. Norman died in 1998 aged 90 and Marian died in 2008 aged 98.

[Some information taken from a life story hand written by Norman sometime after his retirement in 1972]

23rd June 1907 Norman is born at 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan to Evan And Ethel Barton where Evan runs his brother Henry Barton’s Grocers.

3rd June 1910 Marian is born at 270 Liverpool Road Haydock to Banks And Margaret Heaton, father Banks is a Railway Clerk.

1910s In his life story Norman remembers having measles and relatives waving to him through the window of the living room. Soon after Norman and his father Evan visit New Brighton and Norman was sick and remembers “the warmth of my Father’s arm around me”.

1910s In his life story Norman remembers his first school being in Harrogate Street Central Wigan, where he used slate to write on and used sticky gum and strips of coloured paper.

1910s In his life story Norman remembers moving to the Parish Church School, when on Armistice Day 1918 (November 11th) they were given a half day holiday. It is not clear where the Parish Church School was located.

1910s In his life story Norman says he won a scholarship to Wigan Grammar School.

15th July 1922 Norman’s only sibling Colin dies at 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, aged 11.

1924 In his life story Norman says he left Wigan Grammar School with “the usual Certificate”. He would have been around 17 years old, the minimum school leaving age at the time was 14 but pupils at grammar schools could remain until 18 so either Norman got the year wrong or he stayed on longer than normal.

26th March 1924 Norman’s Lamb aunt Laura dies.

11th October 1924 Norman’s mother Ethel dies at 22 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, aged 49. Norman, aged 16, is the Informant on the death certificate, but was not present at the death.

1924 to 1926 In his life story Norman says he spent a couple of years assisting his cousin Evan in his haulage and potato “sales”, which could have been working for his uncle Henry.

March 1926 According to Norman’s life story his father Evan encouraged him to find a proper career and after first rejecting his uncle Edward’s suggestion of getting an apprenticeship in a Chemist’s shop because he “dropped chemistry at the Grammar School”, Norman looked for opportunities in accountancy.

26th March 1926 Norman becomes articled to accountant Mr. N. R. Evans in George Street Central St Helens (according to his life story).

1926 to 1931 Norman works for Evans accountants in Central St Helens. This is possibly how he met Marian since she was living in nearby Garswood.

16th January 1930 Norman’s Barton cousin Thomas commits suicide at Colinfield Farm Swinley Wigan aged 30.

9th May 1930 Norman’s Barton uncle Edward dies.

1931 According to Norman’s life story his articles end after he passes his final exam and Evans the accountant suggests he finds a position oversees. Norman applies to an advert in the Daily Telegraph and after interviews was offered a position in Bombay India “at a salary about three and a half times higher than in England” so Norman accepts a three year contract.

April 1931 Norman leaves for India, on the ship “Brittania” departing from Birkenhead, seen off by Marian, his father Evan and his old employer Mr Evans (according to his life story). On the three week voyage the ship makes stops at Marseille and Port Said and Norman “tasted food the like of which I had not had before”.

1931 to 1934 Norman works in Bombay for an international firm of accountants connected to a Sugar Refinery. Throughout the time he and Marian “had communicated”. Norman turned down another opportunity in Ahmedabad in order to return home.

March 1934 Norman returns from India. According to his life story he returns to his previous office in Central St Helens but soon finds a position in Central Wigan which presumably is the Thomas Wall Accountants that he mentions in other sources.

2nd May 1935 Norman and Marian marry at Holy Trinity Garswood. Norman is aged 27 and living at 22 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, Marian is aged 24 and living at 5 Victoria Road Garswood.

1935 Norman and Marian move into 333 Gathurst Road Orrell Post Wigan, where they live for 50 years.

31st October 1935 Norman’s Lamb aunt Elva dies at 19 Harrogate Street Central Wigan.

26th December 1936 Son Colin is born at Barwood Nursing Home Upholland.

8th February 1937 Norman’s father Evan dies at 22 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, Norman is present at the death.

1938 Second son is born at 333 Gathurst Road Orrell Post Wigan.

1939 According to his life story Norman founds N R Barton & Co “shortly before the 2nd World War” in King Street Central Wigan although other sources suggest this was in 1948. Other sources also suggest the office was opposite the Court Theatre.

14th March 1939 Norman’s Barton uncle Thomas dies.

29th September 1939 Register. Family is living at 333 Gathurst Road Orrell Post Wigan, Norman is an Incorporated Accountant aged 32, Marian is aged 29, Colin is aged 3 and second son is aged 1.

1939 to 1945 Norman works for the government (Ministry of Food maybe) in North Wales during the 2nd World War.

26th October 1940 Daughter Norma is born at 333 Gathurst Road Orrell Post Wigan.

27th September 1941 Marian’s brother Clifford marries Ethel Goulding at Sutton Parish Church St Helens. Norman is a witness and probably best man.

1943 Second daughter is born at 333 Gathurst Road Orrell Post Wigan.

19th April 1943 Norman’s Barton uncle John dies.

11th September 1945 Norman’s Barton uncle Henry dies.

27th September 1952 Marian’s Heaton uncle Herbert dies.

11th January 1953 Norman’s Lamb aunt Mabel dies.

14th February 1954 Marian’s Heaton uncle Henry dies.

27th January 1972 Marian’s Brown aunt Annie dies in Haydock.

8th February 1972 Marian’s Heaton aunt Jane dies.

2nd May 1974 Norman’s Lamb aunt Evelyn dies. Norman reports the death.

24th July 1974 Marian’s Brown uncle Thomas dies.

11th April 1975 Marian’s mother Margaret dies at Billinge Hospital aged 89.

28th February 1976 Norman’s Barton cousin Evan, who he worked with after leaving school, dies at General Hospital Nottingham.

25th November 1979 Marian’s Brown uncle Henry dies.

1970s Second daughter marries.

Late 1980s Norman and Marian move to Ecclesholme Care Home in Eccles Manchester.

1995 Norman and Marian celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary at Ecclesholme Care Home with all their family.

6th February 1998 Norman dies at Ladywell Hospital Salford aged 90 of Carcinomatosis.

21st August 2008 Marian dies at Eccleshome aged 98 of Chronic Renal Failure.
