Overview

Evan Barton was born in 1903 the son of a Grocer from Central Wigan. Hilda Heyes was born in 1906 the daughter of an Accounts Clerk from from Scholes Wigan. Evan and Hilda were married in 1926 at St Michael And All Angels Swinley Wigan. They moved to Derbyshire where Evan was a Dairy Manager, and had three children but the Barton surname was not passed down through this branch of the family. Evan died in 1976 and Hilda died in 1989.

Timeline

19th April 1903 Evan is born at 48 Darlington Street Central Wigan. Father Henry is a Master Grocer. Evan is a traditional name of the Mawdsley family, Henry Mawdsley probably being Evan’s great-grandfather.

31st August 1906 Hilda is born at 168 Darlington Street East Scholes WIgan. Father Henry is an Accounts Clerk.

1924 to 1926 In his life story Evan’s cousin Norman Barton says he spent a couple of years assisting Evan in his haulage and potato “sales” so Evan had this occupation since 1924 at least. This could mean they were both working for Evan’s brother Henry. Photo of a young Evan (from Christine Perry)

23rd August 1926 Evan and Hilda are married at St Michael And All Angels Swinley Wigan. Evan is a Potato Salesman aged 23 living at Colinfield Farm Swinley Wigan, Hilda is aged 19 living at 4 Hill Street Beech Hill Wigan.

5th April 1927 Daughter Margaret born at Barramuir Gidlow Lane Beech Hill Wigan. Evan is a Potato Salesman.

1927 This photo, with inscriptions (from Christine Perry) is of “Jack Mitchinson’s Palais De Dance Band” featuring Evan on drums appearing at the Empress Palais De Dance in the 1926 to 1927 season. “Empress Palais De Dance” is possibly the Empress Ballroom opened in 1916, which later became Wigan Casino, see Wigan Building Preservation Trust.

16th January 1930 Evan’s brother Thomas commits suicide at Colinfield Farm Swinley Wigan aged 30.

30th July 1932 Son Evan born at 451 Gidlow Lane Beech Hill Wigan. Father Evan is a Dairyman. Son Evan does not marry and works for the Post Office in Nottingham, dying on 28th October 1989 in Leeds aged 57 of Myocardial Infarction.

11th September 1945 Evan’s father Henry dies at Colinfield Farm Swinley Wigan.

November 1945 According to Christine Perry Evan is living at 3 Kingston Avenue Ilkeston Derbyshire. This is a photo of him outside the house

11th March 1947 Evan’s mother Elizabeth dies at Colinfield Farm Swinley Wigan.

1945 to 1948 Family moves to Derbyshire, possibly soon after Evan’s parents died, and Evan becomes a Dairy Manager (around 1952). Evan was presumably still working for the Barton Grocer business when his father died so maybe decided to wind up the business and find work elsewhere. 20th December 1957 Daughter Hilda marries Anthony Gerard Titley at Our Lady And St Thomas Ilkeston. Anthony is aged 25 in Telephone Sales living at 19 Glen? Avenue Mill Hill London and daughter Hilda is aged 22 a School Teacher (at Eltham Green Comprehensive School London according to a newspaper clipping from Christine Perry) living at 3 Kingstone Avenue Ilkeston. Sister Margaret is a witness. Anthony and Hilda have two children and live in Kent and Dorset. Daughter Hilda dies aged 78 on 11th January 2024 of “Frailty Of Old Age”. November 1958 According to Christine Perry family are living at 45 Church Street Ilkeston Derbyshire.

28th February 1976 Evan dies at General Hospital Nottingham of Lung Cancer, aged 72. He was a retired Dairy Manager living at 45 Church Street Ilkeston (between Derby and Nottingham). Son Evan was informant and also lived at the same address.

1976 Newspaper notice of Evan’s funeral says he was “manager of the Co-op Dairy at Ilkeston for 24 years” and “cam to Ilkeston from Warrington (sic) to take up the appointment as dairy manager” and he “retired when he was 65”.

28th October 1989 Son Evan dies aged 57 at General Infirmary Leeds of Myocardial Infaction. He was a Retired Senior Personnel Officer at the Post Office living at 1 Brookfield Gardens Nottingham. A newspaper clipping (from Christine Perry) indicates he was at a Rubgy League Test Match at Leeds (Great Britain vs New Zealand) when he collapsed. He left £10,000 to “the game’s adminstrators” in his will and was “a keen fan of the Wigan team”.

2nd December 1989 Hilda dies at Ladywood Nursing Home Ilkeston of Cerebro Vascula Disease aged 83. She was a retired School Teacher living at 21 Morley Drive Ilkeston. Daughter Margaret was present at the death and also lived at the same address.

1989 To 2011 Daughter Margaret moves to Poole Dorset to be near sister Hilda.

22nd March 2011 Daughter Margaret dies aged 83 at Branksome Park Nursing Home 17 Mornish Road Poole Dorset of Ischaemic Heart Disease, she was a Retired Personal Assistant and had never married. Informant was sister Hilda who lived at 17 Whitchurch Avenue Broadstone Poole Dorset.
