18th September 1844 Ellen born in Blackrod to William and Ellen Bentham, William is a Collier.
8th July 1847 James born in Winstanley Wigan to Edward and Jane Nixon, Edward is a Farmer.
1852 to 1853 James’s family moves from Winstanley Wigan to Pottery Wallgate Wigan and James’s father Edward becomes a Labourer. Either they could no longer make a living Farming or the landowner evicted them. James is aged 5 or 6.
21st August 1853 James’s mother Jane dies at Pottery Wallgate Wigan of Typhus aged 37. James is aged 6 and has 6 siblings under 15.
August 1853 to December 1853 James’s family move from Pottery Wallgate Wigan to Ince Wigan. James is aged 6.
11th December 1853 James’s younger brother Henry dies at Ince Wigan of Pneumonia aged 5. James is aged 6.
1853 to 1855 James’s family move from Ince Wigan to Hindley. James is aged 6 to 8.
5th August 1855 James’s brother John dies aged 10 at Lowe Green Hindley of Hemiplegia. James is aged 8.
14th January 1866 James’s father Edward dies at Queen Row Lowe Green Hindley of Asthma aged 60. James is aged 19.
2nd April 1871 Census. James is aged 22 a Collier lodging at Old Slacky Lane Farm House Hindley with Thomas Haughton, a Shoe Maker.
23rd April 1872 James and Ellen married at St Peter Hindley. James is aged 24 a Collier from Queens Row Platt Bridge and Ellen is aged 27 a Mill Hand from Ince Wigan. Neither James or Ellen could sign the marriage certificate, nor could they sign any of the birth certificates of their children.
15th February 1873 Son John born at Foggs Lane Platt Bridge, James is a Collier.
13th April 1873 Son John baptised at Wigan Parish Church.
21st February 1875 Daughter Jane born at Proes? Houses Platt Bridge (probably still Foggs Lane since subsequent children are born there), James is a Collier.

3rd April 1881 Census. Family living at 65 Old Lane Ince Wigan. James is aged 33 a Collier, Ellen is aged 37, John is aged 8, Jane is aged 6, Edward is aged 4, Elizabeth is aged 2 and Maggie is aged less than one month (and is named as “Baby Nixon” on census).
17th October 1881 Daughter Maggie baptised at Wigan Parish Church.
1881 to 1883 Family move to Bickershaw Leigh.
28th May 1883 Daughter Emma born in Bickershaw Leigh, James is a Collier.
17th June 1883 Daughter Emma baptised at St John The Evangelist Abram.
14th March 1887 James’s younger brother Elias dies aged 35 at 71 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan as a result of a Traffic Accident.
1883 to 1891 Family move to Hindley.
24th April 1890 James’s brother Richard, a bachelor, dies aged 50 of Pneumonia Asphyxia in the Union Workhouse Wigan, residence given as Spring View. James is the Informant and was also present at the death.
11th February 1891 James’s sister Susannah dies at age 47 of Heart Disease at 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan.
5th April 1891 Census. Family living at 233 Low Green Road Hindley. James is aged 44 a Collier, Ellen is aged 47, son John is aged 18 a Collier, daughter Jane is aged 16 a Dress Apprentice, son Edward is aged 14 a Miner’s Help, daughter Elizabeth is aged 12 a “Mother’s Help”, Maggie is aged 10 and Emma is aged 8. Both James and Ellen indicate they were born in Pemberton Wigan for some reason.
1891 To 1900 Family move to Platt Bridge.
2nd June 1900 Son Edward marries Alice Molyneux at Independent Methodist Chapel Wigan. Son Edward is aged 23 a Collier from 545 Liverpool Road Platt Bridge and Alice is aged 22 from Liverpool Road Platt Bridge. Daughter Jane is a Witness. Maybe Alice is the Methodist, but see below for burial of James and Ellen.
9th February 1901 Daughter Jane marries Thomas Jones at St Peter Hindley. Thomas is aged 22 a Collier from 23 Walthew Lane Platt Bridge, Jane is aged 25 from 545 Liverpool Road Platt Bridge. Probable best man is Jane’s brother Edward and the other witness is Jane’s sister Elizabeth. Thomas becomes a Publican and they live in Golborne Warrington and have 5 children. Jane dies aged 78 on 9th February 1954 in Winwick Hospital of Myocardial Degeneration, her residence was 46 Charles Street Golborne Warrington. Winwick was a mental hospital and there is no suggestion that it held regular medical patients at this time so presumably Jane was there for her mental health.
31st March 1901 Census. Family living at 545 Liverpool Road Platt Bridge, James is aged 54 a Collier, Ellen is aged 57, son John is aged 28 a Coal Hewer, daughter Elizabeth is aged 22 no occupation given, daughter Maggie is aged 20 a Weaver Cotton Mill and daughter Emma is aged 17 a Dress Maker. Also living there are daughter Jane aged 26 and husband Thomas Jones a Coal Hewer.
8th May 1901 James found dead in the Bridgewater Canal at Hall House Bridge Leigh aged 53, a Collier. This is a modern photo of the bridge
10th May 1901 Inquest into James’s death held. Leigh Chronicle reports on the inquest on the 17th “John Nixon identified the body as that of his father, James Nixon, a Collier, aged 51 [sic, should be 53] […] Deceased has been subject to attacks of dizziness and had not worked since Easter. On Wednesday morning deceased went out for a walk, and witness and his family did not see him again alive. John Banner […] said he was going with his boat to Astley when he saw the body in the water. With the boathook he pulled it to the side, and he and Police Sergeant Worrall took it to the Bull’s Head Inn. An open verdict was returned.”
13th May 1901 James buried at Hindley Cemetery. Religion is given as Non Conformist so perhaps all the family were Methodist, even though the children had been baptised at Anglican churches.
31st January 1904 Ellen dies aged 59 at 543 Liverpool Road Platt Bridge of Bronchitis and Cardiac Failure. Informant was son Edward who was present at the death.
5th March 1904 Daughter Emma marries James Walker at Greenough Street Independent Methodist Church Scholes Wigan. James is aged 21 a Collier living at 40 Moss Lane Platt Bridge and Emma is aged 20 a Dress Maker still living at 545 Liverpool Road Platt Bridge. Emma’s sister Maggie is a witness. James and Emma continue to live in Platt Bridge and have 9 children. Emma dies aged 65 on 3rd December 1948 at 40 Moss Lane Platt Bridge of Hypertension, James was present at the death.
7th August 1907 Daughter Maggie marries Hugh Ramsdale at All Saints Hindley. Hugh is aged 27 a Maker Up In Mill from 6 George Street Hindley and Maggie is aged 26 of Platt Bridge. Hugh and Maggie live in Hindley and have 1 child. Maggie dies aged 80 on 12th October 1961 at 13 Burlington Street Hindley of Arterio Sclerosis, she was buried in Hindley Cemetery with religion Church Of England.
2nd April 1911 Census. Son John is aged 38 boarding at 12 Low Street Scholes Wigan working as a Coal Miner Hewer. Daughter Elizabeth is aged 32 living in Prestwich Manchester with status “Lunatic Patient”. Occupation is Cotton Mill Operative, possibly that was before the 1901 census when she had no occupation. Presumably Elizabeth was moved to the Asylum after Ellen died at the start of 1904.
20th January 1912 Son John marries Ellen Westhead at Wigan Register Office. John is aged 39 a Coal Miner Hewer from 12 Low Street Scholes Wigan and Ellen is aged 41 a widow also from 12 Low Street Scholes Wigan, in the 1911 census Ellen also is recorded as the Head with occupation Boarding House Keeper.
7th July 1913 Son John dies aged 40 at 7 Appleton Street Wallgate Wigan of Cerebral Embolism. Informant was his wife Ellen who was present at the death. John and Ellen had no children. John was buried at Lower Ince Cemetery with religion given as Church Of England.
14th July 1915 Son Edward dies aged 38 at 20 Taylors Lane Ince Wigan of Acute Pericarditis.
19th June 1921 Census. Daughter Elizabeth is aged 43 living at County Asylum Prestwich with status “Patient”.
29th September 1939 Register. Daughter Elizabeth is aged 60 living at County Mental Hospital Prestwich.
30th September 1943 Daughter Elizabeth dies aged 64 at 535 Bury New Road Prestwich Manchester (ie. Prestwich Asylum) of Myocardial Degeneration. Her occupation is given as “Formerly” Cotton Reeler living at 13 Wright Street Platt Bridge. Informant was her sister Maggie living at 13 Burlington Street Hindley. On the burial record the deathplace is given as Prestwich Hospital, and Elizabeth was buried in the same grave as her parents. Elizabeth had probably spent almost 40 years in the Asylum.
