Overview
Alice Emma Branson was born sometime between 1821 and 1825, possibly in St Pancras London. George Lamb was born in 1832 in Blackrod the son of a Calico Printer. They were married in 1857 in Salford. They lived in Liverpool where George was a Traveller and had two children before Alice died aged 34 to 38 in 1859. George continued to live in Liverpool employed as a Carter. George died aged 84 in 1917.

19th August 1832 George baptised in St Katharine Blackrod, no birth date is given. Parents are John and Ellen Lamb residents of Blackrod, John is a Calico Printer.
4th April 1839 George’s sister Jane dies of Consumption aged 14. George is aged 6.
29th November 1839 George’s sister Margaret dies of Inflammation aged 2. George is aged 7.
8th September 1843 George’s sister Ellen dies of Fever aged 21 months. George is aged 11.
1847 To 1851 George’s father John stops being a Printer and becomes a Labourer at a Colliery. Presumably printing can no longer support the family.
30th March 1851 An Alice Emma Branson aged 28 is living in Church Street Blackrod, occupation “Nat School Mistress” (presumably a National School). This gives a birth year around 1823. George is aged 18 living in Smiths Brow Blackrod at the time.
1851 To 1857 George moves to Salford to work in Calico Finishing.
1st January 1857 George and Alice married at Richmond Chapel Broughton Road Salford (an Independent Methodist church). George is a Calico Finisher Foreman aged 24 and Alice is aged 31 (giving a birth year of 1825), both living in Broughton Road Salford. One of witnesses is Ann Lamb, probably George’s sister.
1857 George and Alice move to Birkenhead and George becomes a Bleacher Foreman.
21st November 1857 Son John born at 14 Wilson Street Birkenhead, George is a Bleacher Foreman.
1857 To 1858 Family move to Whiston and George becomes a Finisher.
17th January 1858 Son John baptised at St Katharine Blackrod. Residence given as Whiston and George’s occupation is Finisher.
1858 To 1859 George becomes a Commercial Traveller.
17th September 1859 Son Frederick born at Lane Ends Whiston. George is now a Commercial Traveller.
24th September 1859 Alice dies aged 33 to 38 at Lane Ends Whiston of Peritonitis (possibly due to birth of son Frederick). Informant was George who was also present at the death.
26th September 1859 Alice buried at St Mary The Virgin Prescot, age is given as 33, which gives a birth date around 1825. Gravestone photo (from Steven Lamb).
1st January 1860 Son Frederick baptised at St Katharine Blackrod.
1860 To 1861 Son Frederick moves to live with George’s parents John and Ellen Lamb in Blackrod. George and son John continue to live in Whiston.
7th April 1861 Census. George and son John living at Lane Ends Whiston. George is aged 28 a Commercial Traveller and son John is aged 3. Son Frederick is aged 1 and is living with George’s parents John and Ellen Lamb at Smiths Street Blackrod.
1861 To 1871 George and son John move to Birkenhead, son Frederick remains with George’s parents John and Ellen Lamb in Blackrod. George becomes an Oil Merchant.
2nd April 1871 Census. George and son John boarding at Sussex Terrace Birkenhead. George is aged 36 an Oil Merchant and son John is aged 13 a “Pupil Teacher” (which was when a pupil was is training to become a teacher, see Wikipedia). Son Frederick is aged 11 and is living with George’s parents John and Ellen Lamb at Smiths Brow Blackrod.
22nd May 1874 George’s mother Ellen dies aged 71 at Smiths Brow Blackrod.
1871 To 1881 George becomes a “Team Owner Carrier” which sounds like he owned a haulage business. Son John moves back to Blackrod to live with George’s widowed sister Ann and her children, and son Frederick lives there too.
3rd April 1881 Census. George is aged 48 Lodging at 28 Pilgrim Street Birkenhead, working as a “Team Owner Carrier”. Son John aged 23 an Assurance Agent and son Frederick aged 21 a Wagon Builder are living in Chorley Road Blackrod with George’s widowed sister Ann and her children.
23rd April 1881 Son John marries Mary Helen Crabtree at St Katharine Blackrod. Son John is aged 23 an Agent from Blackrod and Mary is aged 21 from Blackrod. George’s occupation is given as Commission Agent, not “Team Owner Carrier”.
11th July 1881 George’s sister Ann dies aged 46 at Chorley Road Blackrod of Tuberculosis Peritonitis. Son Frederick presumably moves out at this point, he is living with George’s sister Elizabeth in Chorley Road Blackrod by the 1891 census.
26th December 1881 George’s father John dies aged 79 at Chorley Road Blackrod of Natural Decay.
5th April 1891 Census. George is aged 58 a Team Owner boarding at 32 Price Street Birkenhead (a boarding house). Son Frederick is aged 32 a Wagon Examiner living at 35 Chorley Road Blackrod with George’s sister Elizabeth and son John’s son Frederick aged 7.
4th January 1895 George’s brother William dies aged 55.
4th September 1897 Son Frederick marries Margaret Foster at St Katharine Blackrod. Frederick is aged 37 a Wagon Examiner living in Blackrod and Margaret is aged 38 living in Blackrod. One of witnesses is a Florence Lamb probably the daughter of George’s brother John.
31st March 1901 Census. George is aged 68 a Team Owner living at two rooms at 22 Cleveland Street Birkenhead.
1901 To 1911 George moves to live with son Frederick in Bolton.
2nd April 1911 Census. George is aged 78 living at 108 Gibraltar Street Bolton with son Frederick and wife Margaret, of no occupation.
16th April 1913 George’s sister Elizabeth dies aged 82.
31st May 1917 George dies aged 84 at 68 Gilnow Lane Bolton of Bronchitis. Occupation given as Retired Carrier. Informant was son Frederick’s wife Margaret who was present at the death.
2nd June 1917 George buried at St Katharine Blackrod.
22nd June 1917 George’s probate granted, his estate left to son Frederick.
