Overview

Ellen Speak was born in 1882 in Blackrod. Frederick George Lamb was born in 1883 in Blackrod the son of a Railway Worker. Frederick and Ellen married in 1924 in Central Wigan. They lived in Blackrod where Frederick was an Engineer and they had no children. Ellen died aged 73 in 1956 and Frederick died aged 75 in 1959.

14th November 1882 Ellen born at New Street Blackrod to William and Ellen Speak, William is a Coal Miner.

3rd June 1883 Frederick born at New Street Blackrod to John and Mary Lamb, John is a Railway Good Inspector.

5th April 1891 Census. Frederick aged 7 is living with father John’s father George’s sister Elizabeth aged 61 at 35 Chorley Road Blackrod. Maybe there wasn’t enough room for Frederick at his parent’s house where all his other siblings were living.

7th July 1896 Frederick’s sister Ellen dies aged 17 months at 1 Bank Houses Blackrod of Tubercular Peritonitis. Frederick is aged 13.

31st March 1901 Census. Frederick is aged 17 a Apprentice Fitter at a Railway Works living at 20 Black Horse Street Blackrod with father John’s father George’s sister Elizabeth aged 72. Presumably Frederick had lived with Elizabeth since at least 1891.

5th September 1910 Frederick is probable best man at sister Lily’s marriage to William Prescott at St Katharine Blackrod.

2nd April 1911 Census. Frederick cannot be found in census.

1914-1918 No first world war service records can be found for Frederick.

28th November 1917 Frederick’s mother Mary dies aged 56 at The Folds Blackrod of Multiple Sclerosis (of 3 years duration).

19th June 1921 Census. Frederick is aged 38 an Engine Fitter for Leyland Motor Branch at Leyland Motor Works Chorley (see Wikipedia), living at 31 Folds Blackrod with father John and his remaining unmarried siblings Harry, Ellen and John.

12th July 1924 Frederick and Ellen married at Central Hall Station Road Central Wigan (a Primitive Methodist church, maybe Ellen followed that denomination). Frederick is aged 41 a Motor Engineers Fitter living at 31 Folds Blackrod and Ellen is aged 41 living at 120 New Street Blackrod. A witness is Frederick’s sister Lily.

17th June 1925 Frederick’s brother Colin and family emigrate to Australia.

9th July 1925 Frederick’s father John marries Mary Ann Dead at St Katharine Blackrod. John is aged 67 living at 31 The Folds Blackrod and Mary Ann is aged 64 married name Houghton living at 112 New Street Blackrod.

14th June 1927 Frederick’s sister Lily and family plus Frederick’s brother John and wife all emigrate to Australia.

17th June 1934 Frederick’s father John’s wife Mary Ann dies aged 73 at 31 Folds Blackrod of Chronic Interstitial Nephritis (kidney problems).

31st March 1935 Frederick’s sister Emily dies aged 53 at Ancoats Hospital Manchester of Acute Tonsillitis and Pharyngitis.

29th September 1939 Register. Frederick and Ellen living at 120 New Street Blackrod. Frederick is aged 56 a Marker Out at a Motor Works and Ellen is aged 56.

29th January 1943 Frederick’s father John dies aged 85 at 13 Station Road Blackrod of Myocardial Degeneration. Frederick was the informant, living at 120 New Street Blackrod and was also present at the death.

6th October 1953 Frederick’s brother Percival dies aged 68 in London.

6th March 1956 Ellen dies aged 73 at 120 New Street Blackrod of Cerebral Haemorrhage. Death certificate says Frederick was a retired Foreman Engineer at Motor Works.

9th March 1956 Ellen buried at Blackrod Cemetery. Religion is Church Of England. This photo of Frederick at a family wedding (from Stephen Lamb).

26th April 1957 Frederick’s brother John dies aged 55 in Australia.

9th May 1959 Frederick dies aged 75 at 7 Greenfield Road Chorley of Cerebral Haemorrhage. Frederick as still living at 120 New Street Blackrod and the Chorley address was that of Frederick’s sister Laura. Informant was sister Ellen’s husband George Gardner who was also present at the death. Maybe Frederick died at a family gathering?

12th May 1959 Frederick buried at Blackrod Cemetery in same grave as Ellen.
