Overview

1st May 1908 Evan born at 1 Eastcote Terrace Stockwell London to Evan and Mary Mawdsley, Evan is an Accountant.

1st August 1910 Frances born at 52 Bannockburn Road Plumstead London to Henry John Swaisland and Lilian Rennie, Henry is a General Labourer.

2nd March 1919 Evan’s mother Mary dies aged 36, Evan is aged 10.

12th June 1920 Evan’s father marries Ellen Jane Wilsher, Evan is aged 12.

2nd July 1923 Evan’s sister Janet dies aged 18, Evan is aged 15.

1937 To 1938 Evan’s parents Evan and Ellen retire to Nether Stowey Somerset. Evan must have moved with them.

13th August 1938 Evan and Frances married at Parish Church Nether Stowey Somerset. Evan is aged 30 an Accountant living in Nether Stowey and Frances is aged 28 from Mill Hill London (she had been Evan’s secretary according the Lawrence Lowe). Witnesses are Evan Mawdsley (probably also best man) and Ellen Jane Mawdsley, probably Evan’s parents.

1938 to 1939 Evan and Frances move to Hertfordshire.

29th September 1939 Register. Evan and Frances living at 4 Watling Street Radlett Hertfordshire, Evan is aged 31 a Chief Accountant for “Cowma Company” and Frances is aged 29.

28th February 1940 Daughter Valerie is born at St Stephen Gardens St Albans Hertfordshire, Evan and Frances were still living at 4 Watling Street Radlett Hertfordshire.

1940 to 1945 Family move to Kent. This from Lawrence Lowe “Evan served as a naval supply officer throughout the war, based in Kent. He was also in the Home Guard from 1940 to 1945”.

1945 Son is born at Northfields Langton Speldhurst near Tunbridge Wells, Evan and Frances are living in Gillingham, Evan is an Accountant at an Armament Depot.

11th November 1949 Evan flies to New York on business, he works for Uniroyal (from Lawrence Lowe).

1950 According to Lawrence Lowe Evan moves to Edinburgh and the North British Rubber Company (part of Uniroyal).

29th May 1951 Evan and family emigrate to America on Mauretania at Southampton heading for New York. They live there for 20 years, with period returns to UK. This from Lawrence Lowe “The two decades in America were one of the happiest times of his life. He enjoyed his work at Uniroyal. He moved his family to the New York suburbs, to Long Island, and fit easily into American suburban life. He was active with Frances in the Episcopal Church, and in school and scouting activities, devoting all his free time to his family. In conversation towards the end of his life he would come back again and again to America in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1963 he became
an American citizen. He was after that always to regard himself as thoroughly ‘Americanised’”.

1963 Daughter Valerie dies in New York of Cancer shortly after her marriage. No further details are available.

27th November 1964 An Evan Mawdsley is a witness at the marriage of Evan’s step-brother Francis and Margaret Mawdsley. This could be Evan or possibly Evan’s father Evan (who would have been 87 at the time so may be unlikely).

1969 This from Lawrence Lowe “At the end of the 1960s Evan Sr was offered a senior job in Europe by Uniroyal. He and Frances moved to Belgium in 1969, working there for three years until retirement. Frances took to the French language better than Evan did, but he always tried his best with the language”.

Around 1972 Evan retires, according to Lawrence Lowe.

6th April 1974 Evan’s father Evan dies aged 96 in Dorchester, but his residence is given as “Holunda” North Street Blandford Forum Dorset which is where Evan is living, who was also the informant. Evan is aged 65.

13th April 1980 Evan’s step mother Ellen dies aged 94 in Winchester, but her residence is given as “Holunda” North Street Blandford Forum Dorset which is where Evan is living, who was also the informant. Evan is aged 71. This from Lawrence Lowe “Evan still hankered for a retirement in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, but son Evan was now settled in Britain, and Evan gave in to Frances’ wish to stay”.

11th March 2000 Frances dies aged 89 at Blandford Hospital Blandford Forum of Dementia, she was still living at “Holunda” North Street Blandford Forum Dorset. Informant is Evan aged 91. This photo of Evan in old age and also with his sister Tryphena (from Lawrence Lowe).

2000 To 2006 Evan moves to Glasgow to be near son Evan.

13th August 2006 Evan dies aged 97 at Clarence Court 234 Crow Road Glasgow of Multi-Infarct Dementia. Informant was his son Evan who also lived in Glasgow. This from his obituary from Lawrence Lowe “Evan was a natural sportsman, enjoying cricket, rugby and tennis. He trained as an accountant and went to work in the late 1920s for the Dominion Rubber Company in London”.
