Mary Ann Crankshaw was born in 1843 the daughter of a Calico Printer from Blackrod. Richard Lamb was born in 1847 the son of a Labourer from Blackrod. Richard and Mary married in Blackrod in 1871 when Richard was a Carpenter. By 1885 Richard and Mary were living in Harrogate Street Central Wigan where they worked as Grocers for the rest of their lives. Richard and Mary had 8 children. Mary died in 1919 aged 76 and Richard died in 1923 also aged 76. Their unmarried daughter Evelyn continued their Grocery business.

5th April 1891 Census. Family living at 19 & 21 Harrogate Street Central Wigan. Richard is a Grocer aged 44. Mary Ann is aged 48, daughter Elva is a Mantle Makers Assistant aged 18 and daughter Ethel is a Tailoress aged 15.
26th March 1895 Mary Ann is present at the death of her sister Esther in Blackrod.
20th January 1897 Daughter Elva marries Nathaniel Eckersley Ryder at St George Central Wigan. Nathaniel is a Printer living at 2 Foy Street Central Wigan which is a street off Harrogate Street Central Wigan.
12th February 1897 Daughter Elva gives birth to grandson Reginald Ryder at 159 Darlington Street East Scholes Wigan, which is close to Harrogate Street Central Wigan and is the house of Nathaniel’s father Peter.
1897 to 1901 Daughter Elva and Grandson Reginald move back to 21 Harrogate Street Central Wigan. An “E N Ryder” is listed as a Private in the 16th Queens Lancers in the Boer War at this time, though it is unclear whether this is Nathaniel. Documents from 1919 indicate that the address of Nathaniel has not been known to Elva since 1898.
31st March 1901 Census. Family living at 21 Harrogate Street Central Wigan (maybe number 19 was the Grocer shop), including daughter Elva and her son Reginald. Richard is a Grocer Shopkeeper aged 54, Mary Ann is aged 57, Elva is a Mantle Maker aged 28, daughter Ethel is a Tailoress aged 25, daughter Mabel is a Bookbinder aged 22, daughter Evelyn is aged 20, daughter Irene is a Bookbinder aged 19, son Sydney is a Upholsterers Apprentice aged 17, daughter Laura is a General Domestic Servant (in her own home) aged 15. Also present, as a visitor, was Mary Ann’s brother Thomas Crankshaw single aged 61 a Steam Engine Tenter (tended to a stationary steam engine in a factory).
1st November 1902 Wigan Examiner reports a “grand smoking concert” at Adelphi Inn Harrogate Street Central Wigan. The chair was supported by “R. Lamb” which is possibly Richard.
24th February 1903 Daughter Mabel marries Moses Causey at St George Central Wigan. They have 2 children and live in Scholes Wigan where Moses works as a baker. Mabel dies in 1953.
16th May 1906 Daughter Ethel marries Evan Barton at St George Central Wigan. They have 2 children and live in Harrogate Street Central Wigan where Evan manages a Grocers. Their son Norman Richard Barton is at the root of this family tree.
5th September 1908 Wigan Examiner has an promotion for “Doan’s Pills” which features a quote from Mrs. M. A. Lamb of 19 Harrogate Street Central Wigan “For two years I have now used Doan’s Pills, and they have always proved very effective. I take them for lumbago a complaint I am subject to. I had suffered for a long time with pains in the small of my back and never got a remedy to do me good till I used Doan’s Pills; they were recommended to me. I have the highest opinion of the pills, and always urge their use.” Maybe the pills were on sale in the Grocer Shop.
February 1910 Grandson Reginald Ryder presented with medal after saving a child from being run over by a motor car in November 1909, according to the Wigan Examiner.
16th May 1910 Son Sydney marries Catherine Myers at Wigan Parish Church. They have 5 children and live in Scholes Wigan where Sydney is an Upholsterer. Their descendants carry the Lamb name to the present day.
2nd April 1911 Census. Family (including daughter Elva and grandson Reginald) living at 19 & 21 Harrogate Street Central Wigan. Richard is a Shop Keeper aged 64, Mary Ann is aged 67, daughter Elva is a Mantle Maker aged 38, daughter Evelyn is aged 30, daughter Irene is a Stationer aged 29, daughter Laura is aged 25 and grandson Reginald Ryder is a Telegraph Messenger aged 14. Elva’s husband Nathaniel Ryder is boarding in Plymouth working as a Printer.
9th May 1914 Mary Ann’s brother Thomas dies at Wigan Workhouse aged 74 and is buried in a communal grave at Lower Ince Cemetery.
11th December 1915 Grandson Reginald Ryder joins the Army. His occupation is recorded as a Postman.
3rd June 1916 Grandson Reginald Ryder posted to France.
August 1917 Grandson Reginald Ryder wounded in Flanders.
12th August 1917 Grandson Reginald Ryder is killed in action in Flanders, serving as a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery, aged 20. Reginald was buried at Coxyde Military Cemetery Belgium and was also mentioned on the family grave at St Katharine Blackrod. Parents were recorded as “Nathan and Elva Ryder of 19 Harrogate Street Wigan”. According to a report in the Wigan Examiner he was “killed whilst having breakfast with his pals at 8.45 by a shell which fell through the roof” plus “was always to be trusted to get his dispatches through under any conditions”.

January 1919 Daughter Elva receives belongings of Grandson Reginald Ryder including “letters, photos, pocket book, comb (broken), pocket knife, postcards”.
12th May 1919 Daughter Elva signs a military document relating to Grandson Reginald Ryder that states that the address of father Nathan Ryder is “unknown for 21 years” (which is 1898).
16th December 1919 Mary Ann dies at 19 Harrogate Street Central Wigan aged 76 of “Senility”
22nd December 1919 Mary Ann buried at St Katharine Blackrod.
19th June 1921 Census. Richard is a Provision Dealer living at 19 Harrogate Street Central Wigan aged 74 with daughter Elva a Mantel Maker for Pendlebury & Ainscough in Standishgate Central Wigan aged 49, daughter Evelyn doing Home Duties aged 40, daughter Irene a Book Binder for R Platt in Dorning Street Central Wigan aged 39 and daughter Laura Unemployed aged 34. Laura formerly worked for as a shop assistant for milk dealer Henry Barton who was the brother of sister Ethel’s husband Evan Barton, who lived and worked across the road at 22 Harrogate Street Central Wigan. Elva’s husband Nathaniel is boarding at 1 Gladsmuir Street Tottenham working as a Printer.
28th April 1922 Daughter Elva receives “British War And Victory Medals” of grandson Reginald Ryder.
28th December 1923 Richard dies at 19 Harrogate Street Central Wigan aged 76 of “Senile Decay”, recorded as being a Grocer and Baker. Death registered by son Sydney.
2nd January 1924 Richard buried at St Katharine Blackrod.
1924 Onwards Running of grocer business likely to be taken over by daughter Evelyn.
26th March 1924 Daughter Laura dies a spinster aged 38 at Cottage Hospital possibly at Newton Le Willows of “Pulmonary Tuberculosis”. Recorded as living at 19 Harrogate Street Central Wigan. Death registered by sister Evelyn.
31st March 1924 Daughter Laura buried at St Katharine Blackrod.
11th October 1924 Daughter Ethel dies at 22 Harrogate Street Central Wigan (where husband Evan Barton ran Grocers for his brother Henry Barton) aged 49 of Breast Cancer.
15th October 1924 Daughter Ethel buried at St Katharine Blackrod.
10th April 1931 Daughter Irene dies a spinster at 49 at 154 Upholland Road Orrell of “Carcinoma Of Uterus”, that address possibly a nursing home as her residence is given as 19 Harrogate Street Central Wigan. Informant was sister Evelyn.
15th April 1931 Daughter Irene buried at St Katharine Blackrod.
25th January 1934 Daughter Elva’s husband Nathaniel Eckersley Ryder dies aged 60 at 3 Ferdinand Street Chalk Farm of Chronic Bronchitis. His probate indicates he had a wife Isabella Williamson Worth, no record of this marriage can be found.
31st October 1935 Daughter Elva dies aged 63 at 19 Harrogate Street Central Wigan of Influenza, no occupation given. Recorded as Widow of Nathan Ryder.
4th November 1935 Daughter Elva buried at St Katharine Blackrod.
1935 Onwards Evelyn probably living alone at 19 Harrogate Street Central Wigan.
29th September 1939 Register. Daughter Evelyn living alone at 19 to 21 Harrogate Street Central Wigan aged 58 where she is a Grocer.
11th January 1953 Daughter Mabel dies aged 74 at 14 Willow Avenue Newton Le Willows of Stomach Cancer.
Early 1960s Most of Harrogate Street Central Wigan probably demolished at this time, presumably the Grocer business was wound up before this time as Evelyn would have been in her 80s. A comment on Wigan World dated 2012 says “Then there was Miss Lamb’s shop in Harrogate Street. Do you remember that?”.
22n December 1965 Son Sydney dies aged 82 at 93 Bird Street Ince Wigan of Coronary Thombosis.
2nd May 1974 Daughter Evelyn dies aged 93 at Springfield Hostel Wigan (probably a care home in Springfield Wigan) of Senility. Described as a retired “General Dealer“. Death reported by brother Evan’s son Norman Richard Barton.
