Overview
In Haydock the modern Tithebarn Road (Tithe Barn Lane as was) runs from the modern Garswood Road (Robinsons Lane as was) in the west (where the cross road was known as Tithe Barn Hillock) to the modern Liverpool Road (Lower Lane as was) in the east (where the cross road was known as Ashton Cross). This page concentrates on the cluster of houses at the Garswood Road end, where there is a modern roundabout, a small number of houses and a farm called Tithe Barn Farm.

Tithe Barn
Presumably there must have been an actual Tithe Barn at this location at one time but no references to this can be found. A Tithe Barn was where “Tithes” from the local populace were stored for use by the Church, a “Tithe” being a portion of goods each household had to set aside for the local church, See Wikipedia for a general overview of Tithe Barns in northern Europe.
Tithe Barn Hillock And Tithebarn Lane
Tithe Barn Hillock is the area around the modern day roundabout, to the west of the Tithe Barn Farm. On the 1848 map of Lancashire a small cluster of houses can be seen. The road stretching east from there is labelled Tithe Barn Lane.

In the 1892 map nothing much has changed but the road is now called Tithe Barn Road.

202 Tithebarn Road
A house at 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock (or Garswood, or Ashton In Makerfield, depending on the document) was lived in by John and Hannah Heaton, and then their son John and Ann Heaton for a total of almost 50 years.
It is unclear whether this house still exists, Google Maps identifies that address as an empty field, but has a “201” and a “203” and a “204” and no “202”. However Open Street View has “202” on the other side of the road, joined to “201”, but the numbering could have been changed at some point. This is that house on Google Street View.

The timeline of occupation is as follows
- 1891 to 1893 John and Martha Houghton possibly move to 202 Tithebarn Road, but this is speculative

202 Garswood Road

Census Records
It is often interesting to look at all dwellings within a small area in a census to see what neighbours existed as some of the neighbours may appear in subsequent family timelines (as spouses etc).
