Overview

John Heaton was born in 1843 the son of a collier from Seneley Green Garswood. Hannah Houghton was born in 1850 the daughter of a collier from Haydock. John and Hannah married in 1870 at Holy Trinity Garswood and lived in Haydock for the rest of their lives. John eventually became a colliery manager in the area (probably at Pewfall Colliery Haydock). John and Hannah had 9 children of whom 7 survived to have families of their own. John died in 1917 and Hannah died in 1930.

21st January 1844 John baptised at Ashton Chapel Ashton In Makerfield.

7th January 1850 Hannah born in Mill Lane Haydock to John and Martha Houghton, father John is a collier. Mill Lane does not exist on modern maps, this could have been another name for Millfield Lane (which did exist in 1848)?

27th January 1850 Hannah baptised at Holy Trinity Garswood.

18th July 1866 John’s father John dies aged 46, John is aged 22.

24th September 1867 John’s mother Margaret dies aged 44, John is aged 23.

22nd August 1870 John and Hannah marry at Holy Trinity Garswood, John is a 26 year old Collier from Slag Lane Haydock, Hannah is a 20 year old from Robinsons Lane Haydock (today’s Garstang Road).

2nd April 1871 Census. John and Hannah living in Slag Lane Haydock. John is a Collier.

5th January 1872 Daughter Margaret born at Slag Lane Haydock, John is a Collier.

28th January 1872 Daughter Margaret baptised at St James The Great Haydock.

18th October 1873 Son John born at Lower Lane Haydock, John is a collier. Lower Lane is today’s Liverpool Road which Slag Lane runs off so the family could still be living at Slag Lane and use of Lower Lane is an anomaly of the certificate clerk.

9th November 1873 Son John baptised at St James The Great Haydock.

20th October 1875 Daughter Martha born at Slag Lane Haydock, John is a Collier.

5th December 1875 Daughter Martha baptised at St James The Great Haydock.

1875 to 1877 John becomes a “Fireman” at the colliery, which was a Collier who was responsible for safety in a part of the mine.

30th October 1877 Son Henry born at Slag Lane Haydock, John is a Collier.

15th December 1877 Son Henry baptised at St James The Great Haydock, John’s occupation is given as Fireman.

1877 to 1881 John becomes an “Underviewer/Underlooker” at the colliery which is a manager below ground, reporting to a manager of the colliery. John’s father in law John Houghton was a Certified Manager the colliery from around this time.

1st July 1880 Son James born at Slag Lane Haydock, John is a Collier.

25th July 1880 Son James baptised at St James The Great Haydock.

3rd April 1881 Census. Family living in Slag Lane Haydock, John is recorded as an “Underviewer in Coal Mine”.

25th May 1882 Daughter Kate born at Slag Lane Haydock, John is a Collier.

14th June 1882 Daughter Kate baptised at St James The Great Haydock, John is recorded as an “Underlooker”.

24th January 1883 Daughter Kate dies at Slag Lane Haydock of Capilliary Bronchitis (for 4 days) aged 7 months.

27th January 1883 Daughter Kate buried at St Thomas Ashton In Makerfield.

3rd February 1883 Son James dies at Slag Lane Haydock of Diptheria and Exhaustion (for 3 days) aged 2.

1889 to 1891 Family move to live at Pewfall Colliery Haydock, which is presumably where John works, maybe his Underlooker job came with a house.

5th April 1891 Census. Family living at Robinsons Lane Haydock, which could mean Pewfall Colliery Haydock. Daughter Margaret is a Colliery Lamp Cleaner, aged 19, son John is a collier, aged 17, daughter Martha is a Domestic Servant, aged 15, son Henry is a Colliery Clerk, aged 13.

24th June 1891 Son Herbert born at Pewfall Colliery Haydock, John is a Colliery Underlooker.

13th August 1891 Son Herbert baptised at Holy Trinity Garswood, residence given as Robinsons Lane Haydock which is probably the address of the colliery.

1891 to 1896 Family move from Pewfall Colliery Haydock to 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock where they remain for more than 20 years. Hannah and son John live at the same address for a further 13 years and then John on his own for at least another 15 years.

15th March 1893 Hannah’s father John dies aged 70.

16th September 1896 Daughter Margaret, aged 24, marries John Albert Callow, aged 25, a Bookkeeper for the LNW Railway at Garswood Railway Station. Margaret is living at Tithebarn Road Haydock and John is an Under Manager. Margaret and John have 4 children and move to Birmingham with John’s job. Margaret dies on 10th October 1928 in Birmingham, aged 56.

1896 to 1901 John becomes a Colliery Manager, presumably at Pewfall Colliery Haydock. Mother Hannah’s father John Houghton had previously been a manager at the same colliery.

31st March 1901 Census. Family living at Tithebarn Road Haydock except daughter Margaret living nearby at 206 Garswood Road Haydock with her family and son John living in St Helens, working as a Police Constable. Daughter Martha is a Dressmaker aged 25, son Henry is a Colliery Clerk aged 23, daughter Jane is a Colliery Lampgirl on the surface aged 17, son Banks is a Railway Goods Clerk aged 15. John is a Coal Mine Manager.

15th August 1904 Son John marries Jane Mather, at St Mark St Helens, where John is a Police Constable aged 30 and Jane is aged 32. Son John and Jane have 3 children but leave no descendants.

8th September 1904 Son Henry marries Edith Lee at Sutton Parish Church St Helens. Henry is a clerk living at Tithebarn Road Haydock aged 26, Edith lives at 16 Taylor Street St Helens aged 24. Daughter Margaret’s husband John Albert Callow is a witness. Henry and Edith live in Liverpool and have one daughter so the Heaton surname does not descend through them.

2nd April 1906 Daughter Martha, aged 30, marries Robert Dales, aged 38 at Chorlton Register Office Manchester. Martha is living at 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock, Robert is a Police Constable in Levenshulme. Martha and Robert have 2 children and settle in Nelson near Blackburn. Martha dies on 12th June 1958 of Cerebral Thrombosis aged 82.

19th January 1910 Son Banks marries Margaret Brown at Holy Trinity Garswood. Banks is aged 23, a clerk living at Tithebarn Road Haydock and Margaret is aged 24, living at Railway Hotel Garswood (where she was probably a domestic servant). Banks and Margaret raise their family in Garswood, their daughter Marian is at the root of this family tree.

1911 Pewfall Colliery closes.

24th April 1911 Daughter Jane, aged 27, marries William Lawrenson, aged 26 at Holy Trinity Garswood. Jane is living at 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock, William is living at 334 Blackbrook Road Haydock and is a shop assistant. Jane and William live in Haydock and have 2 children, William working as a Co Op Shop Manager. Jane dies on 8th February 1972 of Myocardial Failure aged 88.

12th December 1912 Son Herbert marries Ada Billinge at Wigan Register Office. Herbert is aged 21 a Colliery Clerk living at 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock, Ada is aged 23 living at Clipsley Lane Haydock. Herbert and Ada have no children.

21st February 1915 Son Herbert’s wife Ada dies of Valvular Disease of Heart, aged 29.

29th March 1916 Hannah’s mother Martha dies aged 88.

19th December 1917 John dies at 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock of Nephritis (inflammation of kidneys) aged 73. Son Banks is present at the death, and is also the informant.

29th December 1917 Notice in Wigan Examiner about death of John. It includes “He had been connected with Messrs R Evans And Co, Haydock Collieries for upwards of 50 years and for 30 years a manager” and “He took a keen interest in politics, being a staunch Conservative, and was for some years vice-chairman of the Garswood Conservative Club”. Floral Tributes were sent from the various family members including “Mr Banks Houghton of Market Harborough” plus “Mary Lady Gerard” and “Mr and Mrs W Littler of the Railway Hotel”.

1917 to 1918 Son John and family move from St Helens to 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock to live with mother Hannah.

7th August 1918 Son John’s wife Jane dies aged 46 of Carcinoma Of Omentum and Exhaustion at 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock.

2nd July 1919 Son Thomas marries Lily Littler at Holy Trinity Garswood. Thomas is aged 30 a Colliery Clerk living at Tithebarn Road Haydock, Lily is aged 27 living at Station Hotel Garswood. Lily is related to son Banks’ wife Margaret. Thomas and Lily live in Garswood and have 1 son who has his own family but the Heaton surname does not descend through this line.

3rd November 1919 Son John marries Ann Smith at Holy Trinity Garswood. Son Banks and probably his wife Margaret were witnesses. John is aged 46 a labourer living at 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock, Ann is aged 54 a widow living at 202 Garswood Road Haydock (near Tithebarn Road). John and Ann have no children together.

19th June 1921 Census. Mother Hannah living at 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock aged 71. Son John and family also living at same address but with different census return so maybe living separately.

26th December 1922 Son Herbert marries Margaret Eccles at St Helen Liverpool. Herbert is a Police Constable living at 174 Molyneux Road Liverpool aged 31, Margaret is a Widow also living at 174 Molyneux Road Liverpool aged 33.

1921 to 1930 Mother Hannah moves from 202 Tithebarn Road Haydock to 284 Liverpool Road Haydock, probably to live with daughter Jane.

10th October 1928 Daughter Margaret dies in Birmingham, aged 56, of Carcinoma Of Gall Bladder.

2nd April 1930 Mother Hannah dies at 284 Liverpool Road Haydock of “Senile Decay” aged 80. Son Banks was the informant. Daughter Jane was living at same address in 1939 Register so Hannah was probably living with Jane. Jane dies at the same address in 1972 aged 88.
