In the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses Elizabeth was back in Blackrod living on her own means initially with a Nephew and a Great Nephew. 30th April 1837 Daughter Margaret baptised at St Katharine Blackrod. No birth date given on baptism record but residence is given as “Sharples” and John’s occupation is Calico Printer. This could be the “Sharples” district on the east side of Bolton (Blackrod is to the west of Bolton), or it could be somewhere nearer to Blackrod.
4th April 1839 Daughter Jane dies at Sharples Bolton of Consumption aged 14. John is a Calico Printer and is present at the death.

1847 To 1851 John stops being a Printer and becomes a Labourer at a Colliery. Presumably printing can no longer support the family.
Before 1851 Daughter Elizabeth moves out to be a House Servant.

John is a Labourer On Pit Brow aged 48, Ellen is age 48, son George is a Bleacher aged 18, daughter Ann is employed on Bleach Works aged 16. 1st January 1857 Son George marries Alice Branson at Richmond Chapel Broughton Road Salford. George is a Calico Finisher Foreman aged 24 and Alice is aged 31, both living in Broughton Road Salford. John’s occupation is given as Calico Printer Journeyman not as a Labourer but maybe this was seen as his profession even if he was not actively working in that role. One of witnesses is Ann Lamb, probably George’s sister.
24th September 1859 Son George’s wife Ann dies in Whiston (near Liverpool) aged 34 of Peritonitis after giving birth to a son Frederick.
7th April 1861 Census. Family living at Smiths Street Blackrod (which also no longer exists but may be same place as Smiths Brow). Ann is aged 28 a Worker In Factory resident in Blackrod, Hugh is aged 29 a Domestic Servant and a Widower. Ann’s brother William is a witness (and probable best man) and his future wife Rebecca Crook is the other witness. Ann and Hugh have 2 children, but Ann, Hugh and both children are all dead by 1883.
25th February 1865 Son William marries Rebecca Crook at St Katharine Blackrod. William is a Carpenter and both live in Blackrod. John is a Labourer.
24th April 1868 Daughter Ann’s husband Hugh dies of Consumption aged 35 whilst living in Haigh as a Stove Tender Domestic Servant, the informant was a John Lamb of Smiths Brow Blackrod who was also present at the death, this could be father John or son John, possibly father as he could not sign his name.

2nd April 1871 Census. Family living in Smiths Brow Blackrod. John is a Colliery Labourer aged 68, Ellen is aged 68, son John is a Carpenter aged 26 and son Richard is a Carpenter aged 24. Also living with the family is daughter Ann aged 37 and her two children aged 7 and 4, plus son George’s son Frederick aged 11. Ann is an “Annuitant” so presumably is getting a pension for her deceased husband Hugh. Daughter Elizabeth is aged 40 working as a General Servant in Pennington Green near Hindley for Mary Ellison a Land Agent’s widow.
13th April 1871 Son Richard marries Mary Ann Crankshaw at St Katharine Blackrod. Richard is a Carpenter aged 24 and Mary is aged 28 from Blackrod. Witness is John Lamb a Labourer so this is probably father John.
1st February 1873 Son John marries Jane Entwistle at Parish Church of Great Lever Bolton. Son John is a Joiner and father John is a Labourer.
8th February 1874 Daughter Ann’s son William dies aged 10 in Blackrod of Typhoid Fever (of 21 days duration). A John Lamb was the informant and also present at the death, proably father John as he could not sign the certificate.

1874 John moves from Smiths Brow to Chorley Road, both Blackrod.
3rd April 1881 Census. John is living with son William and his family, aged 78, in Chorley Road Blackrod, occupation given as Block Printer Cotton Dyer, but presumably retired. Living in the same house is son William’s wife’s father Ralph, also widowed, aged 74. 1881 To 1891 Daughter Elizabeth returns to Blackrod. Could be due to sister Ann and father John dying but there is no evidence to prove this.
1st January 1883 Daughter Ann’s son Hugh dies aged 17 at Chorley Road Blackrod of Phthisis (Consumption, of 6 months duration). Ann’s brother John was present at the death.
