Timeline
17th February 1805 Alice born in Blackrod to John and Alice Winward. Birth date from baptism record.
24th March 1805 Alice baptised at St Katharine Blackrod.
22nd November 1809 James born in Blackrod to James and Alice Crankshaw. Birth date from baptism record.
14th January 1810 James baptised at St Katharine Blackrod.
1832 James and Alice married. No marriage document can be found but first recorded child estimated to be born in 1832. James would have been aged about 23 and Alice aged about 27.
1832 Daughter Esther born. No baptism document can be found so birth year estimated from age given on later documents. Daughter Esther does not marry and works first as a Housekeeper in Leigh and then as a dressmaker in Blackrod. Esther dies on 26th March 1895 aged 62 of Carcinoma at 9 Chapel Street Blackrod. Informant was sister Mary Ann who was also present at the death. Esther was buried on 28th March 1895 at St Katharine Blackrod.
1832 To 1839 The baptism record for later son William indicates he was the third son but only two are present in subsequent censuses so a first son could have been born sometime between 1832 and 1839, but no likely baptism or burial records can be found.
23rd July 1839 Son Thomas is born in Blackrod. James is a Labourer. Documentation for son Thomas after 1851 census is sketchy but it is a reasonable assumption that he was a bachelor working as a Steam Engine Driver or Tenter (tendering to a stationary engine). A matching person appears on the 1861 census boarding in Nantwhich Cheshire then nothing for 40 years until a definite match on the 1901 census when he is a visitor to his sister and brother in law Richard And Mary Lamb at 21 Harrogate Street Central Wigan aged 61. In the 1911 census he is residing at a lodging house in Hardybutts Scholes Wigan aged 71. A Thomas Crankshaw dies at Wigan Workhouse on 9th May 1914 aged 74 of Senile Decay and is buried in a communal grave at Lower Ince Cemetery on 13th May 1914.
25th August 1839 Son Thomas baptised at St Katharine Blackrod.
1839 To 1841 James becomes a Printer.
6th June 1841 Census. Family living at “Scotland” Blackrod which is likely to be the area now known as Little Scotland on the western edge of town. The household also includes Alice’s parents John and Alice Winward and Alice’s brother Thomas and his son so it is likely James and Alice were lodging with Alice’s parents (her father John is first person to be listed). James is a Calico Printer aged 30, Alice is aged 35, daughter Esther is aged 9 and son Thomas is aged 2.
2nd November 1841 Son William born in Blackrod. The birth certificate cannot be found, the birth date is from the baptism record.
5th December 1841 Son William baptised at St Katharine Blackrod. James is a Printer. Baptism record has “B.A” written in margin against the entry. The best the internet can suggest is “Bastardy Accusation” which seems unlikely.
7th March 1843 Daughter Mary Ann born at Blackrod. James is a Calico Printer.
16th April 1843 Daughter Mary Ann baptised at St Katharine Blackrod.
11th September 1846 Son James born at Blackrod. James is an Engineer, but this must a mistake of the registrar as he is still a Printer in the baptism record.
25th October 1846 Son James baptised at St Katharine Blackrod.
21st August 1850 Alice dies of Child Birth Exhaustion aged 45 at Blackrod. No trace of a child can be found so the child must have died too, with no records kept. James is a Machine Printer. Informant was a John Crankshaw who was also present at the death, possibly a brother of James. James was left with 4 children under 12, daughter Esther took over the housekeeping role.
30th March 1851 Census. Family is living at Marsh’s Square Blackrod. James is a Machine Calico Printer aged 40 (a guess), daughter Esther is a House Keeper (probably taking on Alice’s role) aged 19, son Thomas is aged 11, son William is aged 9, daughter Mary Ann is aged 8 and son James is aged 4.
1851 To 1861 Daughter Esther leaves to become a House Keeper in Leigh (and sister Mary Ann probably takes over role for father James) and son Thomas leaves to be a Locomotive Foreman in Nantwich Cheshire.
7th April 1861 Census. Family living at New Street Blackrod. James is a Machine Printer aged 50 (internet says that Printworks Blackrod closed in 1860 so James must be working somewhere else), son William is a “Job Pupil Teacher” which could mean he’s training to be a teacher, daughter Mary Ann is a House Keeper (probably taken over from sister Esther) and son James is an Assistant Clerk. Daughter Esther is a House Keeper in Leigh for Peter Topping a Book Keeper at a coal mine, and son Thomas is a Locomotive Foreman at Nantwich Cheshire.
1861 To 1871 Son William leaves to become a Clerk at a Paper Mill in Haigh and daughter Esther moves back to Blackrod to be a Dressmaker.
10th June 1868 Son William marries Mary Almond at St Wilfrid Standish. William is aged 26 a Clerk at a Paper Mill living in Haigh, Mary lives in Standish and is daughter of William Almond, Grocer. Mary has a brother James Birkett Almond who founds a Brewery becoming wealthy and owning the house that became The Beeches at Standish. See Chorley Inns And Taverns for more information.

2nd April 1871 Census. Family is living at Chapel Street Blackrod. James is a Calico Machine Printer aged 61, daughter Mary Ann is a Cotton Weaver aged 28 and son James is a Railway Stoker aged 24. Daughter Esther is living at Black Horse Street Blackrod working as a Dressmaker aged 38. Son Thomas cannot be found.
13th April 1871 Daughter Mary Ann marries Richard Lamb at St Katharine Blackrod. Mary Ann is aged 28. Witness is Mary Ann’s brother James, probably also best man so maybe James and Richard were friends.
21st June 1872 Son William’s wife Mary dies aged 24.
17th August 1873 James dies of Apoplexia at Chapel Street Blackrod aged 63, occupation given as Machine Printer. Son William is informant and was present at the death.
20th August 1873 James buried at St Katharine Blackrod.
