Overview

Thomas Barton was born in 1835 the illegitimate son of a Weaver of Skelmersdale, who later married a Farmer of Skelmersdale, who is presumed to be the father of Thomas. Thomas subsequently moved to live in Wigan. Susannah Nixon was born in 1843 the daughter of a Farmer from Winstanley Wigan who subsequently moved to Hindley. Thomas and Susannah married in 1867 in Hindley, they lived in Wigan settling in Harrogate Street Central Wigan where they established a Grocers and had 6 children. Thomas died in 1880 aged 45 and Susannah took over running the Grocers. Susannah died in 1891 aged 47, with son Henry taking over the Grocer business in Harrogate Street Central Wigan, until his marriage in 1896.

20th December 1835 Thomas baptised at St Thomas The Martyr Upholland, son of Ellen Barton a Weaver (no father recorded but presumed to be Ellen’s future husband Henry Mawdsley).

6th June 1841 Census. Thomas, aged 5, and sister Anne, aged 1, living with mother Ellen Barton and her father John Barton at his cottage by the delf at Grimshaw Skelmersdale.

1st March 1843 Susannah born in Winstanley Wigan to Edward And Jane Nixon, Edward is a Farmer.

3rd November 1844 Mother Ellen marries Henry Mawdsley at Wigan Parish Church. Thomas is aged 8.

1845 to 1847 Thomas’s parents Henry and Ellen move to Wallgate Wigan with Thomas’s sister Anne but without Thomas and his brother John.

30th March 1851 Census. Thomas, aged 15, is living with Henry Mawdsley’s father Evan at Martains House Dalton (and listed as Grandson which could confirm that Henry Mawdsley was Thomas’s father). Henry and Ellen recorded as living in Occleshaw Yard Wigan which cannot be located but is assumed to be off Princess Street Wallgate Wigan.

1851 to 1853 Susannah and her parents move from Winstanley to Wallgate Wigan (where Susannah’s mother Jane dies) and then to Hindley.

1st August 1853 Susannah’s mother Jane dies. Susannah is aged 10.

7th April 1861 Census. Thomas, aged 25, and brother John, aged 18, are working together as servants at Orrell House Farm Gathurst which is the home of Henry Mawdsley’s sister Alice who is the widow of a Thomas Gorse. Henry and Ellen recorded as living at 43 Princess Street Wallgate Wigan with their children.

20th October 1862 Henry Mawdsley dies at 43 Princess Street Wallgate Wigan.

14th January 1866 Susannah’s father Edward dies.

30th July 1867 Thomas and Susannah marry at All Saints Hindley. Thomas is a Labourer aged 29, Susannah is a servant aged 26. The Marriage Certificate has something written in the column for Thomas’s father but it is unclear what it is.

25th June 1868 Son Henry born in Pemberton Wigan, Thomas is a Carter.

1st January 1870 Son Edward born in Atherton Street Newtown Wigan, Thomas is a Carter.

1870 to 1871 Thomas becomes a Grocer in Harrogate Street Central Wigan, possibly funded by mother Ellen Mawdsley who has been operating as a Provision Dealer in Princess Street Wallgate Wigan for more then 20 years.

2nd April 1871 Census. Thomas, aged 35, and Susannah, aged 30, living in Harrogate Street Central Wigan with their two sons. Thomas is now a Grocer and they have a servant.

12th November 1871 Son John born in 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, Thomas is a Provision Dealer.

30th January 1874 Daughter Ellen born in 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan.

7th December 1875 Son Evan born in 22 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, Thomas is a Grocer. Evan is a traditional name of the Mawdsley family, possibly another hint at Thomas’s paternity.

3rd August 1876 Thomas applies for licence to sell “retail beer and cider to be consumed off the premises”, according to Wigan Examiner.

27th October 1877 Son Thomas born in 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, father Thomas is a Provision Dealer.

24th November 1880 Thomas dies at age 45 of Delirium Tremens at 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, recorded as a Provision Dealer. Delirum Tremens is usually associated with Alcoholism.

5th February 1881 Wigan Observer records “transfer of licence” for 22/24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan from a Daniel Marsden to Susannah Nixon. In 1881 census a Daniel Marsden lived at 5 Harrogate Street and was a monumental mason. Was this a “licence to trade” but why did Daniel Marsden have it? Maybe he owned the building.

3rd April 1881 Census. Susannah living at 22/24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan with her children and a servant, aged 39. Susannah is a Provision Dealer.

24th April 1890 Susannah’s brother Richard dies. On the grave record his residence is given as 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan (though he died at Wigan Workhouse) so maybe he was living with Susannah before he died.

9th January 1891 Wigan Examiner reports that two lads (10 and 14) were charged with an attempt to rob the cash till of “Susannah Barton milk dealer”. Son Henry gave chase to one lad and both were apprehended. Younger lad is sent to an Industrial School.

11th February 1891 Susannah dies at age 47 of Heart Disease at 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan.

1891 This is the gravestone of Thomas and Susannah at Lower Ince Cemetery. It also contains daughter Ellen, and the children of John And Jessie Barton.

5th April 1891 Census. Son Henry, aged 22, and all other siblings living at 22/24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, Henry is a Grocer. There is no servant but Henry’s grandmother Ellen Mawdsley (formerly Barton) is living with them.

11th May 1896 Son Henry marries Elizabeth Waterworth at St George Central Wigan. Henry is living at 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan but a year later he is living in Darlington Street Central Wigan (which is a few minutes walk from Harrogate Street Central Wigan).

19th May 1898 Daughter Ellen dies at 48 Darlington Street Central Wigan (brother Henry’s house) of “Facial Erysipelas” (a red rash) at age 24, she is recorded as a Housekeeper.

15th June 1898 Son Edward marries Emma Zoller at St George Central Wigan. Edward is living in Harrogate Street Central Wigan but within a year is living in Beech Hill Wigan.

19th June 1901 Census. Son Evan living alone at 22 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, working as a “Shopkeepers Assistant”, presumably to brother Henry. Son Thomas boarding at 10 Warrington Lane Scholes Wigan (just across the River Douglas from Harrogate Street Central Wigan) working as a Saddler.

29th December 1902 Son John marries Jessie Atherton at Wigan Parish Church. John is recorded as a Widower but no trace of a first wife can be found.

19th May 1904 Son Thomas marries Elizabeth Mostyn at St George Central Wigan, Thomas is a Saddler living in Scholes WIgan.

16th May 1906 Son Evan marries Ethel Lamb at St George Central Wigan. Evan is living in 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, and Ethel is living across the road at number 19 Harrogate Street Central Wigan. Evan and Ethel remain in Harrogate Street Central Wigan, managing the Grocers for bother Henry for the rest of their lives.
