Overview

8th June 1872 Sarah born at 25 Caroline Street Wallgate Wigan to Thomas and Sarah Taylor, Thomas is a Colliery Underlooker.
21st June 1872 Thomas’s mother Mary dies in Standish. Thomas is aged 1.
13th October 1873 Thomas’s father William marries Elizabeth Almond who is his dead mother’s older sister. Family moves to New Springs Wigan.
1875 To 1879 Thomas’s family move back to Standish and father William becomes a Publican at Black Horse Inn Standish.
29th October 1881 First indication that Thomas’s father William’s business is in trouble resulting in William being declared bankrupt and the family moving to Wallgate Wigan. Thomas is aged 10.
7th October 1883 Thomas’s half-sister Mary dies aged 8 at 15 Clayton Street Wallgate Wigan of Scarlatine Maligna (Scarlet Fever). James is aged 12.
18th June 1885 Last documented mention of Thomas’s father William who possibly emigrates to Philadelphia. Thomas is aged 14. In 1891 census Thomas is still living with his step-mother Elizabeth at 15 Clayton Street Wallgate Wigan and is working as a Butcher’s Assistant.
7th October 1893 Thomas and Sarah married at St George Central Wigan. Thomas is aged 22 a Butcher living in Arundel Street Scholes Wigan and Sarah is aged 21 also living in Arundel Street Scholes Wigan (presumbly at different properties). Sarah is pregnant. Sarah’s father Thomas is now a Colliery Manager. Thomas and Sarah setup home in Wallgate Wigan.
14th May 1894 Son Harold born at 22 Sharpe Street Wallgate Wigan, Thomas is a Journeyman Butcher.
17th June 1894 Son Harold baptised at Wigan Parish Church.
13th July 1895 Son Harold dies aged 14 months at 22 Sharpe Street Wallgate Wigan of Pneumonia. Sarah is informant and was present at the death.
16th July 1895 Son Harold buried at Lower Ince Cemetery.

31st March 1901 Census. Family living at 130 Humberstone Road Leicester. Thomas is aged 30 a Butcher’s Superintendent, Sarah is aged 29, son Archibald is aged 4, daughter Annie is aged 2 and son Harry is aged 1.

4th November 1902 Son Harold born at 130 Humberstone Road Leicester, father Thomas is a Butcher Manager.
26th March 1903 Thomas’s step-mother Elizabeth dies aged 65 at 15 Market Street Standish.
1905 To 1909 Thomas’s father William dies.
31st January 1906 Son Harold dies aged 3 at 130 Humberstone Road Leicester of Broncho Pneumonia Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Thomas is a Butcher Manager.
1906 To 1908 Thomas gets his own Butcher shop in Upper Conduit Street Leicester.
23rd January 1908 Daughter Violet born at 87 Upper Conduit Street Leicester, Thomas is a Master Butcher.
2nd April 1911 Census. Family living at 85 Upper Conduit Street Leicester. Thomas is aged 39 a Butcher on Own Account, Sarah is aged 38, son Archibald is aged 14 a Butcher Apprentice (presumably with his father), daughter Annie is aged 12, son Harry is aged 11, son Thomas is aged 9 and daughter Violet is aged 3.
30th June 1915 Thomas’s brother James dies aged 46 at 2 Church Street South Elmsall Yorkshire of Cardiac Failure.
3rd August 1916 Daughter Joan born at 87 Upper Conduit Street Leicester, Thomas is a Master Butcher. Sarah is aged 44.
29th October 1918 Son Harry is killed in France or Flanders, he was a Private in the Royal Lancaster Regiment. He is buried at Don Communal Cemetery Annoeullin.
1918 An Archibald Crankshaw got First World War campaign medals whilst a Private in the Royal Army Service Corps. However there is no evidence to confirm whether this was our Archibald.
19th June 1921 Census. Family living at 85/87 Upper Conduit Street Leicester. Thomas is aged 50 a Butcher working from Home employing staff, Sarah is aged 50, son Archibald is aged 24 an Engineers Assistant at Ridgway & Co 26 Carrington Street Leicester, daughter Annie is aged 22 an Overlooker at Rowley & Co Queen Street Leicester, son Thomas is aged 19 a Steel Turner at Hill Furnishing Queen Street Leicester, daughter Violet is aged 13 and daughter Joan is aged 4.
2nd April 1923 Daughter Annie marries Ernest Clarence Bricknell at St Nicholas Eydon Daventry. Ernest is 27 a Motor Mechanic from Eydon Daventry and Annie is 24 from St Peter Parish Leicester. Witnesses are Thomas (Annie’s father or brother) and Sarah Crankshaw (Annie’s mother). Ernest and Annie live in Brackley where Ernest is a Publican and have no children. Annie dies aged 97 on 24th February 1996 at Fairacres Nursing Home Culworth Banbury of Myocardial Infarction. Her occupation is given as Retired Farmer, residence 5 Lime Avenue Eydon Daventry. Informant is a Philip William Grinyer who was married to Annie’s sister Violet’s daughter.
27th January 1925 Daughter Joan dies aged 8 at 87 Upper Conduit Street Leicester of General Tuberculosis. Thomas was informant and was present at the death. Unusually there is a probate for Daughter Joan where she left £193 17s 10d to her father Thomas.
6th February 1926 Son Archibald marries Gladys Freak at Leicester Register Office. Archibald is aged 29 a Motor Engineer living at 87 Upper Conduit Street Leicester and Gladys is aged 23 a Shoe Stockroom Worker living at 38 Leamington Street Leicester.
27th July 1926 Thomas dies aged 55 at 87 Upper Conduit Street Leicester of Hemiplegia and Cerebral Haemorrhage (duration 8 days). Sarah was informant and was present at the death. Thomas’s probate leaves money to fellow butchers William Rowland Hill and George Sarson but nothing to Sarah. Sarah and the remaining children continue to live at 87 Upper Conduit Street.
17th October 1931 Daughter Violet marries Wilfred Hare at St Peter Leicester. Wilfred is aged 23 a Salesman from 20 Cobden Street Leicester and Violet is aged 23 of 87 Upper Conduit Street Leicester. One of witnesses is son Archibald. Wilfrid and Violet live in Leicester where Wilfrid is a shop owner and have 1 child. Violet dies aged 76 on 27 November 1984 at General Hospital Leicester of Myocardial Infarction. Her occupation was Postmistress living at 5 Main Street Scraptoft Leicester.
1931 To 1939 Family move from 87 Upper Conduit Street Leicester.
1934 Son Archibald and wife Gladys divorce, they have 1 child.
29th September 1939 Register. Family living at 35 Dorchester Road Leicester. Sarah is living on Private Means and son Thomas is an Engineer’s Turner. Also living there are daughter Violet, her husband Wilfred and their child.
18th December 1939 Son Archibald marries Iris Evelyn Walker at Leicester Register Office. Archibald is aged 44 a Garage Proprietor living at 277 Uppingham Road Leicester and Iris is aged 34 living at the same address.
3rd August 1942 Son Archibald commits suicide aged 45 at 277 Uppingham Road Leicester.
5th August 1943 Son Thomas marries Edith Hetty Barson at St Martin Leicester. Thomas is aged 42 an Engineer living at 16 Loseby Lane Leicester and Edith is aged 42 living at 41 Harrow Road Leicester.
19th May 1945 Son Thomas dies aged 43 at Royal Infirmary Leicester of Lympho Carcinoma. He was a Master Engineer living at 41 Harrow Road Leicester. His wife Edith was informant and was present at the death.
3rd January 1952 Sarah dies aged 79 at St Francis Private Hospital London Road Leicester of Myocardial Failure following an Operation For Stone In Common Bile Duct. She was living at 155 Overtone Road Leicester with her daughter Violet who was the informant. Of her 8 children 6 had pre-deceased her.
