Overview

Thomas Heaton was born in 1889 the son of a Colliery Underlooker from Haydock. Lily Littler was born in 1890 the daughter of a Farmer from Windle St Helens. Thomas and Lily were married in 1919 in Garswood, where they spent the rest of their lives. They had one son who had his own family, but the Heaton surname did not descend to the present day. Lily died in 1958 and Thomas died in 1960.

31st January 1889 Thomas Heaton born to John and Hannah Heaton in Haydock. John is a Colliery Underlooker.

26th January 1890 Lily Littler born to William and Esther Littler in Windle St Helens. William is a Farmer at Folds Farm Windle St Helens.

1914 onwards There is no record of Thomas serving in the armed forces during the First World War.

2nd July 1919 Thomas and Lily married at Holy Trinity Garswood, Thomas is a Colliery Clerk living at Tithebarn Road Haydock aged 30, Lily is living at Railway Hotel Garswood, aged 27. Lily’s father William now runs that Hotel and is the brother of the father of Henry’s brother Banks’ wife Margaret.

19th June 1921 Census. Thomas and Lily living at 282 Liverpool Road Haydock. Thomas, aged 32, is a Colliery Clerk and Bookkeeper for Richard Evans & Co Colliery Proprietors in Haydock. Lily is aged 31.

23rd April 1924 Son John Edward Littler born at 282 Liverpool Road Haydock. Father Thomas is a Colliery Clerk.

1924 To 1939 Family moves to Railway Hotel Garswood, maybe the Littler family is still running the Hotel and the family are renting rooms there. Lily’s father is retired and living elsewhere by 1939.

29th September 1939 Register. Family living at Railway Hotel Garswood but Thomas is still a Colliery Clerk aged 50, Lily is aged 49 and John Edward Littler is aged 15. No-one else is recorded at the hotel so maybe it was just being used as a dwelling.

1939 To 1950 Thomas becomes a Licensee, presumably of Railway Hotel Garswood, maybe after Lily’s father dies in 1946.

21st June 1950 Son John Edward Littler marries Harriet Brimelow at Holy Trinity Garswood. John Edward Littler still lives at Railway Hotel Garswood a Civil Engineer aged 26 , Harriet lives at 457 Wigan Road Bryn aged 22. John Edward Littler’s father Thomas is listed as a Licensee, presumably of the Hotel they are living in.

1950 To 1958 Thomas and Lily move to Billinge.

23rd September 1958 Lily dies at Royal Infirmary Liverpool of Left Ventricular Failure aged 68. Residence given as 77 Newton Road Billinge.

17th June 1960 Thomas dies at 77 Newton Road Billinge of Cerebral Haemorrhage aged 71, occupation given as Retired Colliery Clerk, son John Edward Littler present at the death.
