Thomas Brown was born in 1859 the illegitimate son of a woman from Windle St Helens. Elizabeth Rigby was born in 1860 the daughter of a Joiner from Windle St Helens. Thomas and Elizabeth were married in 1880 in Eccleston St Helens. They had 8 children and lived in Windle St Helens where Thomas was a Farm Labourer. 8th March 1859 Thomas is born to Ann Brown at City Windle St Helens, with no father given. Ann is aged 17 years and 8 months.

27th March 1859 Thomas is baptised at St Helen St Helens. The image of the original baptism has something written after “Thomas” which is unreadable and the entry under parent seems to have had the father erased.

24th May 1859 Mother Ann marries John Littler at St Helen St Helens. This comes so soon after the birth of Thomas that John Littler is almost certainly Thomas’s father. John is described as a Farmer and is aged 19 and Ann is aged 17.

9th February 1860 Elizabeth is born to Edward and Margaret Rigby at City Windle St Helens where Edward is a Journeyman Joiner.

1st April 1860 Elizabeth is baptised at St Thomas Eccleston.

2nd May 1865 Thomas’s mother Ann dies, aged 23.

23 June 1867 Thomas’s father John marries Margaret Brown who is Thomas’s mother Ann’s sister.

2nd April 1871 Census. Thomas is living with his Father John, step-mother Margaret, his siblings and step-siblings at Hard Lane City Windle St Helens which is the home of Thomas’s grandfather Thomas who is a Farmer.

9th May 1880 Thomas and Elizabeth marry at St Thomas Eccleston. Thomas is a Farmer from City Windle St Helens aged 22 and Elizabeth is from Fenton Street Eccleston St Helens aged 21.

3rd April 1881 Census. The census information for the family cannot be found but presumably they were living at Dentons Green Windle St Helens since son John was born there later in the month.

28th April 1881 Son John is born at Dentons Green Windle St Helens, where Thomas is a Farmer.

5th April 1891 Census. Family living at Roughleys Lane which cannot be located but is likely to be in the City Windle St Helens area as Thomas would need to be close to his work. Thomas is a Farmers Son aged 33, Elizabeth is aged 32, son John is aged 10, daughter Annie is aged 9, daughter Margaret is aged 5 and son Edward is aged 1.

1891 to 1892 Family move from Roughleys Lane St Helens to Hard Lane Cottage City Windle St Helens.

29th February 1892 Son Thomas born at Hard Lane Cottage City Windle St Helens, where father Thomas is a Farm Labourer.

8th August 1892 Elizabeth’s father Edward dies.

1892 to 1895 Family move from Hard Lane Cottage City Windle St Helens to 22 Friar Street City Windle St Helens (which is off Hard Lane).

27th January 1895 Son William born at 22 Friar Street City Windle St Helens, Thomas is a Farm Labourer.

15th November 1895 Son William dies at 94 Friar Street City Windle St Helens, aged 9 months of Tubercular Meningitis having been ill for 14 days. Thomas is a Farm Labourer.

13th August 1896 Thomas dies at what looks like “Hollins Hey” which is probably Hollin Hey Farm Garswood (to north west of City Windle St Helens) which must have been where he was working at the time, no residence is given. Thomas died of Disease Of Heart and Dropsy (accumulation of fluid) aged 37 and was an Agricultural Labourer. Elizabeth is aged 36 with 5 dependants and is pregnant. Thomas’s death is reported by Henry Littler of Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens who is Thomas’s half brother. At the time of Thomas’s death son John is aged 15, daughter Annie is aged 13, daughter Margaret is aged 10, son Edward is aged 7 and son Thomas is aged 4.

August 1896 to February 1897 Family move to 271 City Road City Windle St Helens (which is just south of the junction with Hard Lane).

20th February 1897 Son Henry is born posthumously at 271 City Road City Windle St Helens.

19th November 1897 Thomas’s step-mother Margaret dies.

1897 to 1901 Family move to 281 City Road City Windle St Helens (which is just at the junction with Hard Lane) and Elizabeth finds work as a Washerwoman to support her dependants. Son John finds work as a Horseman on a farm, daughter Annie finds work as a Domestic Servant at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens which is run by Thomas’s father John Littler and daughter Margaret finds work at the Railway Hotel Garswood as a Domestic Servan working for Thomas’s brother William Littler.

31st March 1901 Census. Family is living at 281 City Road City Windle St Helens except for daughter Annie and daughter Margaret. Elizabeth is a Washerwoman aged 41, son John is a Horseman on a Farm aged 19, son Edward is aged 11, son Thomas is aged 9 and son Henry is aged 4. Daughter Annie is working as a Domestic Servant at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens for her grandfather John Littler and daughter Margaret is working as a Domestic Servant at Railway Hotel Garswood for her uncle William Littler. Also living at 281 City Road City Windle St Helens are Elizabeth’s mother Margaret aged 72, her brother Edward a Glass Blower aged 35 and her nephew John aged 6.

15th June 1902 Elizabeth’s mother Margaret dies at 281 City Road City Windle St Helens.

4th October 1902 Son John marries Mary Ryans at St Mark Windle St Helens. John is living at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens at the time as a Labourer.

25th December 1902 Daughter Annie marries Jonathan Twist at St Mark Windle St Helens. Annie is living at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens at the time. Annie and Jonathan go on to have 7 children and settle in Haydock where Jonathan is a Coal Hewer in a Colliery until he dies in 1943. Annie dies in Haydock on 27th January 1972 of Carcinoma Of Bladder aged 89.

1902 to 1911 Son John becomes “Head” at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens but is a Carter for St Helens Corporation, so possibly not farming.

19th January 1910 Daughter Margaret marries Banks Heaton at Holy Trinity Garswood. Margaret is living at Railway Hotel Garswood at the time, presumably still a Domestic Servant.

2nd April 1911 Census. Elizabeth cannot be found on the 1911 census. Sons Edward and Thomas, aged 21 and 19, are working for John Littler at Pyes Farm Haresfinch St Helens, whilst son Henry is living with his brother John at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens as an On Farm Cow Boy aged 14. Pyes Farm and Folds Farm are adjacent to each other on Folds Lane Haresfinch St Helens. The other living children have their own families.

16th December 1914 Son Edward is discharged from Armed Forces for medical reasons and Elizabeth is given as next of kin, living in College Street Central St Helens.

20th February 1915 Son Edward marries Annie Waine at St Mark Windle St Helens. Son Edward is living at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens as a Farm Labourer.

10th July 1915 Son Thomas marries Ellen Smith at St Peter Parr St Helens. Son Thomas is living at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens working as a Farm Labourer.

23rd April 1918 Thomas’s father John dies.

6th October 1919 Elizabeth dies at 203 College Street Central St Helens of Cardiac Failure aged 59, no occupation is given. Son John was the informant.

22nd November 1919 Son Henry marries Doris May Hughes at St Helen St Helens. Henry is living in Haydock at the time, a Carter.
