Thomas And Elizabeth And Ellen Barton
1904 To 1966
Son Of 2 x Great Grandparents (Barton Family #3)
Overview
Thomas Barton was born to a Grocer in Central Wigan in 1877. Elizabeth Mostyn was born to a Labourer in Openshaw Manchester in 1879. Ellen Gill was born to a Glass Blower in St Helens in 1887. Thomas and Elizabeth were married in 1904 at St George Central Wigan but Elizabeth died later in 1904 due to complications in a pregnancy, though no record of a child can be found. Thomas signed up for the armed forces in 1915 and later that same year married Ellen near Salisbury where he was stationed. Thomas was discharged from the armed forces in 1919 and he and Ellen lived in Abram for the remainder of their marriage and had two children, but their son died in infancy so the Barton surname has not been passed down through this branch. Thomas was a Saddler for most of his life. Thomas died in 1939, and Ellen remarried and died in 1966.

21st September 1904 Elizabeth dies at 190 Scholes Wigan aged 25 of Puerperal Septicaemia which is an infection after childbirth, but no trace of a child can be found so this could have been a miscarriage. Thomas is a Master Saddler and was present at the death. A Master Saddler has people working for him so Thomas was trying to establish his own business at this time (see references below).
1904 This is the gravestone of Elizabeth at Lower Ince Cemetery. It is also the grave of Thomas’s parents Thomas And Susannah Barton.

2nd April 1911 Census. Thomas is living at 2 Cudworth Street Wallgate Wigan and is a Dairyman aged 33. He could be working for his brother Henry but that is not recorded. Thomas went back to being a Saddler so maybe work was scarce at the time.
7th September 1915 Thomas signs up for the armed forces and gives his addess as 10 Regent Street Scholes Wigan which is the address of his brother John and wife Jessie so Thomas must have been living with them at the time. Thomas is a Widowed Saddler aged 38 and is 5 feet 5 3/4 inches in height. Next of kin is given as Thomas’s brother Henry of 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan (which was Henry’s business address not his home address). As part of signing up Thomas supplied a reference from an employer called W J Ashton of 17 Millgate Central Wigan who said “he was good workman, I was very sorry to part with him, but cannot put obstacles in their way when they improve themselves”, which hints maybe Thomas left his employ some time before he signed up, possibly before Thomas tried establishing his own business around 1904. There is another reference from James Robinson of 53 Wallgate Wigan who says “having known him to be in the trade for the last 24 years, part of the time he has been in business on his own account” (this probably refers to around the period of 1904 when Thomas was described as a “Master Saddler”).

4th December 1915 Thomas “joins” which maybe means he joins his regiment.
14th December 1915 Thomas marries Ellen at Fovant Parish Church which is in Fovant near Salisbury, so Thomas must have been stationed there at the time. Thomas is aged 39 and his address is given as Fovant and his occupation as Saddler in the Royal Army Service Corps which was responsible for servicing other Corps. Ellen is aged 29 and her address is given as Wigan, so she must have travelled down to Fovant to get married, maybe with Thomas’s brother John and his wife Jessie, as Jessie was a witness to the marriage. After the marriage Thomas’s next of kin is changed to Ellen and his address to 4 Hornby Street Swinley Wigan.
19th December 1915 Thomas embarks on the ship “Ionic” from Devonport.
4th January 1916 Thomas disembarks at Port Said.

4th October 1920 Son Thomas Eric is born at 215 Lily Lane Abram. Thomas is a Journeyman Saddler.
19th June 1921 Census. Family living at 215 Lily Lane Abram, with another family which is probably the sister of Ellen and her husband. Thomas is aged 43 an out of work Saddler who last worked for J Robinson Ltd of Wallgate Wigan which is the same business that gave Thomas a reference when Thomas signed up for the armed forces in 1915, so either Thomas hasn’t worked since the war or was re-employed by James Robinson and since lost his job. Ellen is aged 32 and son Thomas is 8 months.
17th December 1923 Son Thomas dies at 215 Lily Lane Abram of Lumbar Pneumonia aged 3. Thomas is Saddler and was present at the death.

14th March 1939 Thomas dies at 6 Kintbury Street Abram, of Hemiplegia (weakening of one side of the body), aged 61, occupation Labourer. Informant was one Joshua Hodson of 127 Lily Lane Abram who was also present at the death, maybe an old neighbour or friend from Lily Lane.
