Places: Workhouse Wigan

The Wigan Workhouse (also known as Union Workhouse Wigan) was on Frog Lane Central Wigan. A workhouse was already in existance at Frog Lane when the new Poor Law came into force in 1834 but this was replaced by expanded buildings by 1858. Gradually the workhouse changed from housing for able bodied poor into an infirmary for the sick and elderly until in 1930 it became part of medical infrastructure of Wigan Corporation. The buildings were demolished starting in the 1960s and by the 1990s all buildings were gone. The site is now occupied by Boston House NHS and private housing.

See Wigan Building Preservation Trust, Workhouses.org and Wigan World for more information.

The odd ancestor was resident at the Union Workhouse when it acted as an infirmary.
