(See Wigan for overview of the whole town)
Winstanley is a neighbourhood to the south west of Central Wigan bounded by a railway line to the north, Warrington Road to the east, countryside to the south and the Winstanley Estate to the west.
This also covers the areas Highfield and Marus Bridge.
Winstanley was an old rural district separate from Wigan which got consumed over the years. Winstanley Hall and Estate was once a grand house and park, long time residence of the Bankes family that became big local industrialists, but is now derelict.
See Wikipedia and Billinge History Society for more information. Also see this lengthy essay on Winstanley history from Wigan World.
Winstanley was the location of Coush House and Jamesons Farm which were occupied by Edward And Jane Nixon.
