Places: Wallgate Wigan

(See Wigan for overview of the whole town)

Wallgate is a neighbourhood to the immediate south west of Central Wigan, bounded by railway lines to the north, the River Douglas to the east and south and the Leeds And Liverpool Canal to the west.

Wallgate was the location of Princess Street where Henry and Ellen Mawdsley settled after moving to Wigan, and also of Mawdsleys Jam Factory that their son John established.

Wallgate had a parish church St Thomas and also the Chapel Lane Presbyterian.

Wallgate was once a major residential area but virtually all of the houses were demolished in the 1960s. Now the area is mainly commercial. It contains the famous Wigan Pier area.
