Places: St Thomas Ashton In Makerfield

(See Hundreds And Parishes for background of Parish organisation)

St Thomas is the parish church of Ashton In Makerfield. A Chapel Of Ease for St Oswald Winwick was recorded here in 1515, though the present church was built in 1893. The church became a Parish in its own right in 1845.

References to “Ashton Chapel” in older certificates are believed to refer to St Thomas, before it was made a Parish Church, when it was a Chapel Of Ease.

For more information see Wikipedia and Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerks.

Several ancestors had ceremonies here, including ancestors from Garswood before Holy Trinity was built.
