St Helens was only incorporated as a town in 1868, made up of four older townships: Windle, Eccleston, Parr and Sutton. The town is centered on the ancient chapel of St Elyn that gave the town its name.

A major employer in St Helens is Pilkingtons Glass Manufacturer.
