Places: St Helen St Helens

(See Hundreds And Parishes for background of Parish organisation)

St Helen is the parish church of St Helens, it existed as a chapel of ease since the 16th Century, sometime referred to as St Elyn. After 1816 the church was enlarged and rededicated to St Mary (although certificates still refer to it as “St Helen”). The church was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the 1920s after which it was rededicated back to St Helen.

The church is in the centre of modern St Helens and was included in the area of Hardshaw within the district of Windle St Helens.
