Skelmersdale is a town to the west of Wigan. It was once a rural district but all traces of that have been lost when the newtown was built.

The Barton ancestors originated from the Skelmersdale area when it was a rural district. The area of Grimshaw was a dwelling place of the Barton ancestors in Skelmersdale and Sephtons Hall was the home of Mawdsley ancestors in Skelmersdale. Barton family also dwelt in Spencers.
