Places: Railway Hotel Garswood

The Railway Hotel at Garswood is on Station Road near Garswood Railway Station.

The Hotel was run from the late 19th Century through to the mid 20th Century by the Littler family

  • before 1899 licence was with a Robert Cowan
  • in or before 1899 William Brown Littler, a son of ancestors John and Ann Littler, started running the hotel (transfer of licence to William was recorded in Wigan Examiner on 19th August 1899)
  • ancestor Margaret Brown worked as a domestic servant at the hotel from at least 1901 to her marriage in 1910
  • by 1939 William Brown Littler was retired and living elsewhere but Thomas and Lily Heaton were living there though Thomas’s occupation is a Colliery Clerk so presumably not running the hotel, Lily was the daughter of William Brown Littler, no other residents are recorded at the hotel
  • possibly run from 1946 by Thomas and Lily Heaton who had been living at the hotel from some time before
  • between 1950 and 1958 Thomas and Lily Heaton leave the hotel
