Places: Pewfall Colliery Haydock

(See Coal Mines for a general overview)

Between Haydock and Garswood is a rural district known as Pewfall that had a colliery. The colliery opened in 1860 and closed in 1911. There is a Pewfall Reservoir in the area now, near the site of the colliery.

Ancestor John Houghton was a manager at Pewfall Colliery, starting as an Underlooker between 1856 and 1859, moving to live at the Colliery between 1871 and 1875, becoming manager between 1876 and 1879 and retiring by 1891. See Northern Mine Research Society for references to John Houghton at Pewfall Colliery.

John Houghton’s son-in-law and ancestor John Heaton was also probably a manager at Pewfall Colliery, starting as an Underlooker between 1877 and 1881, moving to live at the Colliery between 1889 and 1891 and becoming a manager between 1896 and 1901. No explicit references to John Heaton as a Manager at Pewfall can be found online.

John Heaton’s Granddaughter Nellie was found drowned in Pewfall Reservoir in 1942.
