Norman Richard Barton started a career in accountancy in 1926 with a company run by N. R. Evans in Central St Helens.
Between 1931 and 1934 he worked for an international firm of Accountants connected to a Sugar Refinery in Bombay India.
On returning from India he worked for Thomas Wall Accountants Central Wigan, and married.
During the second world war he worked for the government in North Wales.
He established the company N R Barton & Co in King Street Central Wigan, opposite the Court Theatre, in upstairs offices, with a wine dealer on the ground floor (according to some notes made by Norman himself).
According to his own life story N R Barton & Co was establised before the second world war but according to UK Accounting Firms it was established in 1948.
In 1970 the business moved to larger premises in Bridgeman Terrace Central Wigan.
Norman retired in 1972 and the business was eventually taken over by existing partners, since none of Norman’s family was involved in the company.
In recent years N R Barton & Co was incorporated as N R Barton Limited (in 2018) and moved to Waterside Drive Wallgate Wigan and was then taken over by Cowgills Accountants in 2025.
