Sometime between 1847 and 1848 Henry Mawdsley started a Grocer business at Princess Street Wallgate Wigan. Previously to this Henry was a Labourer, it is unclear how he came by the funds to setup a business.
Henry was also described as a Cow Keeper, a Provision Dealer and a Farmer (though maybe that is a reflection on his past occupation in Skelmersdale).
In 1862 Henry died at 43 Princess Street Wallgate Wigan which was presumably the location of the Grocer business too. His wife Ellen and son John take over the business (both are recorded as Grocers in the census of 1871).
In 1880 son John marries and mother Ellen moves out to live with a daughter, so presumably John is in sole charge of the business at this point.
By 1884 John had transformed the Grocer business into Mawdsleys Jam Manufacturers which carried on until somtime after 1966.
No artifacts of the 30 years of Mawdsley Provision Dealers can be found on the internet.
