Gathurst is a hamlet to the north west of Wigan.

Thomas Barton and his brother John were servants at a farm at nearby Orrell Post in the 1860s which was originally identified as a farm in Gathurst, but this is unlikely to be the case, see Orrell House Farm for a full discussion on this.
