Central Wigan is the town centre, bounded to the north by Mesnes Park and the Northway road, to the east by the River Douglas, to the south by the two main railway lines and to the west by the West Coast Main Line.

Central Wigan is the location of Harrogate Street, Wigan Parish Church, St George and King Street Baptist Church.
