In the 1851 census John Barton is dwelling at Spencers Skelmersdale, however in the census images there are a lot of entries with a blank location, which is assumed to indicate a duplicate of the previous entry which goes back many sheets to an entry that says “Spencer’s” so this is probably a road. Modern day Spencers Lane is south of Grimshaw but the name does not appear on the 1848 map, but modern day Spencers Lane does join with Daniel’s Lane which is on the 1848 map.
