16th February 1874 Mary born in Farnworth Bolton to James and Rachel Ryans (given as Ryan on birth certificate). Father James is a Furnace Man at a Chemical Works.

28th April 1881 John born in Dentons Green Windle St Helens to Thomas and Elizabeth Brown. Father Thomas is a Farm Labourer.

13th August 1896 John’s father Thomas dies aged 37. John is aged 15.

1896 to 1901 John becomes a Horseman on a Farm.

4th October 1902 John and Mary marry at St Mark Windle St Helens, John is a Labourer aged 21 living at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens, Mary is aged 28 living at 98 Islands Brow Haresfinch St Helens. One of witnesses is a Margaret Brown which could be John’s sister.

13th February 1903 4 months after the marriage daughter Maggie is born at 19 Orrell Street Parr St Helens. John is a Farm Labourer.

16th March 1903 Daughter Maggie baptised at St Peter Parr St Helens.

16th June 1903 Daughter Maggie dies at 92 Ramford Street Parr St Helens of Convulsions aged 4 months. John is a General Labourer, so maybe is not an agricultural labourer any more.

20th February 1904 Daughter Florence born at 92 Ramford Street Parr St Helens. John is a General Labourer. Further details of Florence cannot be found, she is present in the 1911 cenus but not in the 1921 census when she would have been 17.

1904 to 1906 John starts to work for St Helens corporation as a Carter. He works for the corporation for the rest of his working life.

14th August 1906 Son Thomas born at 14 Ramford Street Parr St Helens. John is a Corporation Carter.

1906 to 1911 Family move from Parr St Helens to Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens, although John’s occupation at this time is a Corporation Carter rather than Farmer.

2nd April 1911 Census. Family living at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens where John is a St Helens Corporation Carter aged 29, Mary is aged 35, daughter Florence is aged 7 and son Thomas is aged 4. Also living there were Mary’s mother Rachel aged 62, John’s brother Henry aged 14 working as an On Farm Cow Boy and a boarder Thomas Hill aged 17 working as an On Farm Cow Boy. It is unknown whether the Cow Boys were working at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens or another nearby farm, possibly Pyes Farm Haresfinch St Helens.

13th March 1912 Daughter Mary born at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens. John is a Corporation Carter. Further details of Mary’s life cannot be found, she is present in the 1921 census and is a witness to brother Thomas’s marriage in 1934 but not is not in the 1939 register, when she would have been 27.

1912 to 1917 Family move from Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens to White Cottage Green Leach Haresfinch St Helens, Green Leach Lane is a road off Hard Lane.

19th May 1917 Daughter Edna born at White Cottage Green Leach Haresfinch St Helens. John is a Driver for Royal Engineers (although no military service can be found) and a Corporation Carter.

6th October 1919 John’s mother Elizabeth dies aged 59.

19th June 1921 Census. Family living at White Cottage Green Leach Haresfinch St Helens. John is a Horse Carter for St Helens Corporation Health Department aged 40, Mary is aged 45, daughter Florence is missing, son Thomas is a Haulage Hand at Ashtons Green Colliery in St Helens aged 14, daughter Mary is aged 9 and daughter Edna is aged 4.

23rd September 1934 Son Thomas marries Annie Halsall at Baptist Chapel Park Road Parr St Helens. Thomas is a General Labourer aged 28 living at 18 Woodlands Road Haresfinch St Helens and Annie is aged 26 living at 21 Woodlands Road Haresfinch St Helens so were possibly neighbours. Father John is a Corporation Carter and Thomas’s sister Mary was a witness. Thomas was possibly living with his parents at that address.

18th December 1937 Daughter Edna marries Herbert Stirzaker at St Helens Register Office. Herbert is an Acetylene Welder at a Colliery aged 21, Edna is aged 20 living at 58 Hamblett Crescent Haresfinch St Helens. Edna and Herbert have 2 children and remain living in St Helens. Edna died of Old Age on 31st January 2002 aged 84 at Mayfield Nursing Home St Helens.

29th September 1939 Register. John and Mary living at 58 Hamblett Crescent Haresfinch St Helens. John is a Supervisor at St Helens Corporation Cleansing Department aged 58 and Mary is aged 65.

8th June 1965 John dies at 47 Berrys Lane Sutton St Helens of Carcinoma Of Descending Colon aged 84. His occupation is given as a retired Chargehand at St Helens Corporation Cleansing Department.

The death date of Mary cannot be found.
