22nd August 1879 Daughter Catharine buried at St Thomas Ashton In Makerfield.

1879 To 1881 Family moves to Robinsons Lane (modern day Garswood). This roads runs adjacent to Pewfall Colliery Haydock so they could still be living at the Colliery but a later census shows them living at 202 Robinsons Lane which is further north so they could have living there from this date.

3rd April 1881 Census. Family living at Robinsons Lane Haydock. John is a Manager at a Colliery aged 57, Martha is aged 53, son Henry is a Surveyor (Land & House) aged 21 and daughter Margaret Ellen is aged 14. Son Banks Houghton is a Draper’s Assistant aged 18 living (and presumably working) with his brother John (still a Draper) at 181 Stamford Street Ashton Under Lyne.

5th October 1881 Son Henry marries Hannah Cunliffe at Holy Trinity Garswood. Henry is a Surveyor aged 22 and Hannah is aged 21. John is a Certificated Manager. Witness and probable best man is Henry’s brother Banks.

Thomas is a Commercial Traveller aged 21 from Ashton In Makerfield and Margaret Ellen is aged 19 resident at Clifton (presumably the one in Manchester). Father John is a Manager. Witness is a John Houghton probably Margaret Ellen’s brother John, so Margaret Ellen could have been living with brother John at the time. Thomas and Margaret Ellen have 8 children. Thomas Crompton is part of the Crompton Hinge And Lock maker family of Ashton In Makerfield and went on to run the business from 1910, becoming very wealthy. See The Football Voice for more background on the business. Margaret Ellen dies aged 77 on 5th March 1944 of Bronchopneumonia at The Rookeries Ashton In Makerfield.

1891 To 1893 Family possibly moves to Tithebarn Road Haydock. This could have been number 202 where daughter Hannah and husband John Heaton were living by 1896 at the latest.

15th December 1893 John dies aged 70 of Bronchitis. Death certificate and parish burial say Tithebarn Road but the probate (which was only completed in 1916) says 202 Garswood Road which is where Martha lived after John’s death. Informant was son Henry who was also present at the death.

19th December 1893 John buried at St Thomas Ashton In Makerfield.

1911 To 1916 Martha moves to 270 Liverpool Road Haydock (near the southern end of Garswood Road) which was formerly the home of daughter Hannah’s son Banks Heaton until 1915 at the latest. Martha could have been living with Banks at some stage during this period or Martha could have taken over the house after Banks left before 1915.

29th March 1916 Martha dies aged 88 due to Shock from a Fractured Femur at 270 Liverpool Road Haydock. Informant was daughter Hannah’s son Banks Heaton who was also present at the death.

1916 Probate on John’s will is completed. It is unclear why this happened 23 years after his death, probably something to do with with Martha’s death.
