Timeline

12th November 1871 John born at 24 Harrogate Street Central Wigan, son of Thomas and Susannah, Grocers.

8th July 1877 Jessie born at Marsh Lane Central Wigan, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Atherton.

Before 1902 John may have married, he was recorded as a Widow in the marriage certificate with Jessie, but no certificate can be found.

31st March 1901 Census. A John Barton is recorded as “Living On Own Means” aged 29 as a Lodger at 17 Wiend Central Wigan. The Head of the family is a Cotton Mill worker not a Licensed Victualler so this is unlikely to be a pub (and could be across the road from Three Tuns Inn at number 19, see below). It is uncertain whether this is our John Barton, the marital status on the Census is “Single”, though that may be an error.

29th December 1902 John and Jessie marry at Wigan Parish Church. John is a Licensed Victualler aged 32 and Jessie is a barmaid at the same pub aged 25. The name of the pub is not clear, it looks like Three <something> Tavern, possibly Hills, but no such pub can be found. It does not look like Three Tunns Inn but given that John and Jessie will be licensees at Three Tuns Inn seven months later it could well be. John’s brother Thomas is a witness and probably best man.

16th July 1903 Less than seven months after the wedding daughter Eleanor is born at Three Tuns Inn Wiend Central Wigan, described as “18 Wiend” in the baptism record, John is a Licensed Victualler.

6th August 1903 Daughter Eleanor baptised at St Thomas Wallgate Wigan, John is a Publican at 18 Wiend Central Wigan.

1903 To 1908 John stops being a Licensed Victualler and becomes a Carter, living in Scholes Wigan.

21st September 1908 Daughter Elizabeth born at 13 Coop Street Scholes Wigan, John is a Carter, Informant for the birth is Thomas Atherton described as an “Occupier”, this could be Jessie’s father, so John and Jessie could be living with him.

8th October 1908 Daughter Elizabeth baptised at St George Central Wigan, John is a Carter.

9th October 1908 Daughter Elizabeth dies at 13 Coop Street Scholes Wigan of Whooping Cough, aged less than three weeks old and the day after she was baptised. Jessie was present at the death.

13th October 1908 Daughter Elizabeth buried at Lower Ince Cemetery, grave D 496.

24th October 1908 Daughter Eleanor dies at 13 Coop Street Scholes Wigan of Broncho Pneumonia aged 5. Jessie was present at the death.

27th October 1908 Daughter Eleanor buried at Lower Ince Cemetery, grave D 496, same plot as sister Elizabeth.

1908 to 1910 John and Jessie move to 10 Regent Street Scholes Wigan where they spend the rest of their lives.

4th July 1910 Son Herbert born at 10 Regent Street Scholes Wigan, John is a Carter.

2nd April 1911 Census. Family living at 10 Regent Street Scholes Wigan. John is a Carter aged 39 and Jessie is aged 33. Also living there is Thomas Atherton a retired Carter aged 68 recorded as “Grandfather” so would be Jessie’s grandfather, or possibly her father.

3rd November 1912 Son Herbert dies at 10 Regent Street Scholes Wigan of Whooping Cough (same as sister Elizabeth) aged 2. Jessie is present at the death.

7th November 1912 Son Herbert buried at Lower Ince Cemetery, grave D 496, same plot as sisters Eleanor and Elizabeth.

1912 This is the gravestone for Elizabeth, Eleanor and Herbert at Lower Ince Cemetery. It is the grave of John’s parents Thomas And Susannah Barton.

7th September 1915 John’s brother Thomas signs up for the armed forces and gives his addess as 10 Regent Street Scholes Wigan so must have been living with John and Jessie at the time.

19th June 1921 Census. John and Jessie living at 10 Regent Street Scholes Wigan. John is a Journeyman Motor Driver aged 49 working for Mr Highton a Butcher of 99 Scholes Wigan and Jessie was aged 43.

29th September 1939 Register. John and Jessie living at 10 Regent Street Scholes Wigan. John is a Dairyman aged 67, Jessie is aged 62.

19th April 1943 John dies at 10 Regent Street Scholes Wigan of Broncho Pneumonia aged 71, occupation was a Milk Roundsman. Jessie was present at the death.

21st April 1943 John buried at Lower Ince Cemetery, grave G 3.

14th December 1961 Jessie dies at Billinge Hospital of Cardiac Failure aged 84, she was living at 10 Regent Street Scholes Wigan and is recorded to be the widow of John Barton, a Butcher (probably harking back to his job around the time of 1921 Census). Informant was a James Houghton a nephew.

20th December 1961 Jessie buried at Lower Ince Cemetery, grave G 3 the same plot as John. Burial record indicates Jessie died at Cottage Hospital Pemberton, maybe she was there before being moved to Billinge Hospital.

1961 This is the gravestone at Lower Ince Cemetery, the grave also contains Jessie’s parents Thomas and Elizabeth Atherton.
