Margaret Brown was born in 1837 the daughter of a Nail Manufacturer from Central St Helens. John Littler was born in 1839 the son of a Farmer from Windle St Helens. Ann Brown (Margaret’s sister) was born in 1841 the daughter of a Farmer from Windle St Helens. John and Ann were married in 1859 in St Helens, less than 3 months after Ann gave birth to an illegitimate son (John assumed to be the father). John and Ann had three more children before Ann died in 1865. John married Ann’s sister Margaret in 1867 in Liverpool. John and Margaret had 5 children. Margaret died in 1897 and John died in 1918.

18th August 1837 Margaret is born at Church Street Central St Helens to Thomas and Elizabeth Brown. Father Thomas was a Nail Manufacturer.
9th December 1839 John is born at Cabbage Hall Windle St Helens to John and Mary Littler. Father John is a Farmer.
22nd June 1841 Ann is born at Hard Lane Windle St Helens to Thomas and Elizabeth Littler. Father Thomas is a Farmer according to birth certificate but a Nail Manufacturer according the parish baptism. He is a nail manufacturer in the 1841 census.
8th March 1859 Son Thomas is born at City Windle St Helens with no father given. Ann is aged 17 years and 8 months. Son Thomas takes Ann’s surname of Brown.
27th March 1859 Son Thomas is baptised at St Helen St Helens. The image of the original baptism has something written after “Thomas” which is unreadable and the entry under parent seems to have had the father erased.

24th May 1859 John and Ann marry at St Helen St Helens, 2 months after son Thomas’s birth which is strong evidence that John was the father. John and Ann are first cousins, Ann’s mother is Elizabeth Littler the sister of John’s father John. John is a Farmer from St Helens aged 19, Ann is aged 17.
1861 Son John born. No birth certificate can be found.
10th February 1861 Son John is baptised at St Helen St Helens. John is a Farmer in Windle St Helens.
7th April 1861 Census. The census details for the family cannot be found.
14th February 1863 Son William Brown is born at City Windle St Helens. John is a Farmer.
22 March 1863 Son WIlliam Brown is baptised at St Helen St Helens.
1863 To 1865 Family moves to Moss Bank Carr Mill St Helens.
5th April 1865 Son Henry is born at Moss Bank Windle St Helens. John is a Farm Labourer. Modern Moss Bank is to the north of St Helens in the Carr Mill district, the whole of that area must have been referred to as Windle at that time. Moss Bank appears in the 1848 map at the expected place.
2nd May 1865 Ann dies aged 23 at City Windle St Helens of Phthisis or Tuberculosis (10 months duration so she must have had for the whole of her pregnancy with son Henry born than a month previously). John is a Farm Labourer. Informant is an Adam Grundy who was also present at the death.
16th May 1865 Son Henry dies aged 1 month at Hard Lane Windle St Helens of Debility From Birth (presumably caused by Ann’s Tuberculosis). Informant is Ann’s father Thomas Brown who was also present at the birth and also lived at Hard Lane. Son Henry was possibly living with Ann’s father after Ann’s death.
1865 To 1867 John moves to Liverpool and becomes a Carter.
23rd June 1867 John marries Margaret at St Nicholas Liverpool. Margaret is Ann’s sister and also John’s first cousin. John is a Carter living at North Street Liverpool and Margaret is also living at North Street Liverpool.
1867 Family moves back to Windle St Helens and John becomes a Farmer again. By the 1871 census they are living with Margaret’s father Thomas Brown in Hard Lane Windle St Helens.
5th August 1867 Daughter Ann is born at City Windle St Helens less than 2 months after the marriage. John is a Farmer.
17th July 1869 Son Henry is born at Hard Lane Windle St Helens. John is a Farmer.
21st February 1870 John’s mother Mary dies at Cabbage Hall Windle St Helens.
2nd April 1871 Census. Family are living at Hard Lane Windle St Helens with Margaret’s father Thomas Brown a Farmer aged 67. Hard Lane is the location of Cabbage Hall Windle St Helens but the family was not living there, Cabbage Hall is not named on the 1871 census, but John’s father is also living in Hard Lane so that is likely to be Cabbage Hall (his wife Mary dies at Cabbage Hall in 1870). John is a Farm Labourer aged 31, Margaret is aged 33, Ann’s son Thomas is aged 12 (and is recorded as surname Littler not Brown), Ann’s son John is aged 10, Ann’s son William Brown is aged 8, Margaret’s daughter Ann is aged 3 and Margaret’s son Henry is aged 1.
1871 Family move to City Windle St Helens.
27th October 1871 Son James born at City Windle St Helens. John is a Farmer.
31st May 1875 Son Joseph born at City Windle St Helens. John is a Farmer.
11th March 1877 Margaret’s father Thomas dies at City Windle St Helens. Informant is John Littler who is also present at the death so this is presumably Margaret’s husband John.
28th January 1878 Son Peter born at City Windle St Helens. John is a Farmer.
1878 To 1881 Family move to Hard Lane Windle St Helens.
9th May 1880 Ann’s son Thomas marries Elizabeth Rigby, using surname Brown not Littler and residence is given as City Windle St Helens.
3rd April 1881 Census. Family living at Hard Lane Windle St Helens. John is a Farmer aged 41, Margaret is aged 42, Ann’s son John is a Farm Labourer aged 20, Ann’s son William Brown is a Farm Labourer aged 18, Margaret’s daughter Ann is aged 14, Margaret’s son Henry is aged 12, Margaret’s son James is aged 10, Margaret’s son Joseph is aged 7 and Margaret’s son Peter is aged 4.
2nd July 1882 Ann’s son John marries Elizabeth at Christ Church Eccleston. Son John is a Farm Labourer from Eccleston (so could have moved out of father John’s home before the marriage) aged 21 and Elizabeth is aged 19. Father John is Farmer.
11th September 1884 John’s father dies at City Windle St Helens.
15th August 1885 Margaret’s daughter Ann dies aged 18 at “Windle City” Windle St Helens of Phthisis (Tuberculosis, duration 6 months) and Diarrhea (duration 1 month). Use of the phrase “Windle City” could mean the actual road name “Windle City”. John was present at the death.
1885 To 1891 Family move to Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens.
5th November 1885 Ann’s son William Brown marries Esther Glover at St Thomas Eccleston. William is a Farmer of Boundary Road Eccleston (so probably moved out of father John’s home before the marriage) aged 22 and Esther is aged 24 from Eccleston. John is a Farmer.
5th April 1891 Census. Family living at “1 Folds” St Helens which probably means “1 Folds Lane” which probably means Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens although this name is not used in the census, however the name is used 7 days later in son James’ marriage certificate which proves that the family are living at Folds Farm. John is a Farmer aged 51, Margaret is aged 53, Margaret’s son Henry is a Farmers Son aged 21, Margaret’s son James is a Farmers Son aged 19, Margaret’s son Joseph is a Farmers Son aged 16 and Margaret’s son Peter is a Farmers Son aged 13.
12th April 1891 Margaret’s son James marries Martha Finney at St Mark Windle. James is a Farm Labourer aged 19 living at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens and Martha is aged 19 living at Back Lane Laffak St Helens (which is part of Haresfinch). John is a Farmer.
13th August 1896 Ann’s son Thomas Brown dies.
19th November 1897 Margaret dies aged 60 at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens of Cardiac Disease and a Cerebral Embolism (duration 8 days). Son Henry was informant and present at the death.
20th July 1898 Margaret’s son Henry marries Ann Turner Curren at St Mark Windle St Helens. Henry is a Farmer aged 29 living at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens and Ann is aged 31 from Moss Bank Windle St Helens. John is a Farmer.
31st March 1901 Census. Family living at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens. John is a Farmer (Dairy & Tillage) aged 63, Margaret’s son Peter is a Teamsman on Farm aged 23. Margaret’s son Joseph cannot be found in the census. In addition 3 servants were living at the farm, Esther Welding a widowed housekeeper aged 55, Harry Beesley a Cattleman on Farm aged 15 and Annie Brown a General Servant Domestic who was the daughter of Ann’s son Thomas Brown.
1903 Margaret’s son Joseph marries Jane Walker.
8th June 1908 Margaret’s son Peter marries Winifred Hannah Clarkson at St Mark Windle. Peter is a Farmer aged 30 living at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens and Winifred is aged 35. John is a Farmer.
1908 To 1911 John moves to Pyes Farm Haresfinch St Helens.
2nd April 1911 Census. John is a Farmer aged 71 living at Pyes Farm Haresfinch St Helens with Margaret’s son Henry and his family, John is marked as the Head. Also living there are Edward Brown and Thomas Brown two sons of Ann’s son Thomas Brown.
1911 To 1918 John, son Henry and family move back to Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens.
23rd April 1918 John dies aged 78 at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens of Pneumonia. Informant was Margaret’s son Henry’s wife Ann who was also present at the death, and also lived at Folds Farm Haresfinch St Helens.
