Barton Family #4 & Mawdsley Family #1

Overview

Ellen Barton, born in 1812, the daughter of a Quarry Man from Skelmersdale, had 3 or 4 illegitimate children starting 1835 before marrying Henry Mawdsley, born 1805, the son of a Skelmersdale farmer, in 1844. Henry is assumed to be the father of Ellen’s illegitimate children due to circumstantial evidence. Henry and Ellen went on to have 6 more children and moved to Wallgate Wigan around 1846 where they became shopkeepers. Henry died in 1862, when Ellen took over the shop before living with descendants until she died in 1894.

Timeline

19th July 1805 Henry born, according to baptism record.

4th August 1805 Henry baptised at St Michael Aughton, parents Evan and Mary Mawdsley of Aughton.

14th June 1812 Ellen baptised at St Thomas The Martyr Upholland, father John Barton is a labourer from Skelmersdale.

20th December 1835 Ellen’s son Thomas Barton baptised at St Thomas The Martyr Upholland, no father recorded (but presumed to be Henry Mawdsley). Ellen is a weaver from Skelmersdale, aged approximately 23. Son Thomas will continue to be known as Thomas Barton after Ellen marries Henry Mawdsley.

29th September 1838 A John “Borton” or “Barton” baptised at Sts Peter And Paul Ormskirk, mother Ellen. This would fill the gap between Thomas and Anne, but the baptism is not in St Thomas The Martyr Upholland so this is speculative. One transcription also has Ellen down as a Widow but that could be a mistranscription as she is recorded as a Spinster on her marriage certificate with Henry.

4th October 1838 John Barton (not Borton) buried at Sts Peter And Paul Ormskirk.

5th July 1840 Ellen’s daughter Anne baptised at St Thomas The Martyr Upholland, no father recorded (but presumed to be Henry Mawdsley), Ellen is from Skelmersdale, aged approximately 28. Daughter Anne sometimes referred to as Anne Mawdsley after Ellen’s marriage but will marry Thomas Barton (from a different Barton family) so coincidently ends up with the Barton surname.

6th June 1841 Census. Ellen aged 25 living with her father John Barton in a cottage by the delf at Grimshaw Skelmersdale with children Thomas and Anne. Henry aged 35 living at Sephton’s Hall Skelmersdale, with parents and siblings. Grimshaw and Sephton’s Hall are a few minutes walk from each other. There were weaver’s cottages adjacent to the Grimshaw Skelmersdale cottage so that could be where Ellen earned some money as a weaver.

5th February 1843 Ellen’s son John Barton baptised at St Thomas The Martyr Upholland, no father recorded (but presumed to be Henry Mawdsley), Ellen is from Skelmersdale, aged approximately 30. Son John will refer to himself as John Mawdsley after Ellen’s marriage to Henry.
