Overview

Edward Nixon was born in 1805 to a Farmer from Winstanley Wigan. Jane Moyers was born in 1816 to a Blacksmith from Billinge. Edward and Jane were married in 1839 in Haigh. Edward was a Farmer in Winstanley Wigan who moved to other districts of Wigan and then to Hindley where he was a Horse Man in a Colliery. They had 7 children, two of whom died in childhood and one of whom was a bachelor, the rest starting families of their own. Jane died in 1853 before the family moved to Hindley, and Edward died in 1866.

Timeline

25th August 1805 Edward is baptised at St Aidan Billinge with residence given as Winstanley Wigan.

10th March 1816 Jane is baptised at St Aidan Billinge with residence in Billinge and father’s occupation of Blacksmith.

1838 Edward’s father John is recorded as living at and farming Jamesons Farm Winstanley in the Tithe Maps.

5th March 1839 Edward and Jane are married at St David Haigh, with both giving residence as Aspull which is strange as both families are based to the west of Wigan whilst Aspull is to the east, but the information about their fathers match. Jane would have been about 2 months pregnant at the time. Edward is a Farmer aged 33 and Jane is aged 23 so they are of full age. Jane’s father Richard is now also a Farmer. One of witnesses is William Hurst who could be a relative of Edward’s mother. Only the previous year Edward’s father John is recorded in the Tithe Maps as living in Winstanley Wigan, so possibly Edward was working and living in Aspull.

21st October 1839 Son Richard is born at Winstanley Wigan. Father Edward is a Labourer. Birth Certificate is poor quality and mother’s maiden name seems to be Grayson for some reason. Richard does appear in the 1841 census as expected. Richard does not marry and becomes a Collier in Hindley dying on 24th April 1890 aged 50 of Pneumonia Asphyxia in the Union Workhouse Wigan, residence given as Spring View. Informant is his brother James who was also present at the death.

17th November 1839 Son Richard is Baptised at St Aidan Billinge.

15th December 1840 Daughter Elizabeth is born at Winstanley Wigan. Father Edward is now a Farmer, and mother’s maiden name is Moyers.

December 1840 Edward possibly changes occupation to be a Grocer?

31st December 1840 Daughter Elizabeth is baptised at St Aidan Billinge. Date of birth on the transcript is given as 22nd December instead of 15th and Edward’s occupation is a Shop Keeper which does match the 1841 census.

6th June 1841 Census. Family is living at Coush House Winstanley Wigan. Edward is a Grocer aged 30, Jane is aged 25 (these are probably both guesses), son Richard is aged 1 and daughter Elizabeth is aged 5 months.

14th October 1841 Edward’s Nixon uncle Richard, who had been a bachelor living at Jamesons Farm Winstanley with Edward’s father John dies aged 42. This could possibly be the trigger that caused Edward’s father John to move to Upholland and Edward to move to Jamesons Farm Winstanley and become a Farmer.

1841 to 1843 Edward returns to being a Farmer.

1st March 1843 Daughter Susannah is born in Winstanley Wigan where Edward is a Farmer.

26th March 1843 Daughter Susannah is baptised at St Aidan Billinge.

1844 A John Nixon is in the Tithe Maps as owning and occupying land in Upholland (actually modern day Skelmersdale). This could be Edward’s father John as he subsequently died in Upholland.

28th February 1845 Son John is born in Winstanley Wigan where Edward is a Farmer.

4th April 1845 Son John is baptised at Wigan Parish Church. Residence is Winstanley Wigan and Edward’s occupation is Farmer. It is not clear why the family switched baptisms from St Aidan Billinge to Wigan Parish Church.

8th July 1847 Son James is born in Winstanley Wigan where Edward is a Farmer.

30th July 1847 Son James is baptised at Wigan Parish Church. Residence is Winstanley Wigan and Edward’s occupation is Farmer.

3rd June 1849 Son Henry is born in Winstanley Wigan where Edward is a Farmer.

6th July 1849 Son Henry is baptised at Wigan Parish Church. Residence is Winstanley Wigan and Edward’s occupation is Farmer.

20th August 1850 Edward’s father John dies in Upholland.

1850 to 1851 Edward and Jane possibly move into Jamesons Farm Winstanley Wigan after Edward’s father John dies, or it could have been before that, possibly when after Edward’s uncle Richard dies and Edward changed back to being a Farmer in 1841-1843?

30th March 1851 Census. Family living at Jamesons Farm Winstanley Wigan where Edward is a Farmer aged 45 and Jane is aged 35 (both possibly guesses). Son Richard is aged 11, daughter Elizabeth is aged 9, daughter Susannah is aged 7, son John is aged 5, son James is aged 3 and son Henry is aged 1. Edward’s widowed mother Sarah cannot be found in the 1851 census but she dies in Warrington in 1852.

26th November 1851 Son Elias is born at Jamesons Farm Winstanley Wigan, Edward is a Farmer.

9th January 1852 Son Elias is baptised at Wigan Parish Church. Residence is Winstanley Wigan and Edward is a Farmer.

1852 to 1853 Family moves from Winstanley Wigan to Pottery Wallgate Wigan and Edward becomes a Labourer. Either they could no longer make a living at Jamesons Farm Winstanley Wigan or the landowner evicted them.

1st October 1852 Edward’s mother Sarah dies in Warrington.

21st August 1853 Jane dies at Pottery Wallgate Wigan of what look like Typhus (of 14 days duration) aged 37. Edward was present at the death, residence was Pottery Wallgate Wigan occupation Labourer. Edward is aged 48 with 7 children under 15.

24th August 1853 Jane is buried at St Aidan Billinge.

August 1853 to December 1853 Family move from Pottery Wallgate Wigan to Ince Wigan and Edward becomes a Labourer in a Coal Mine (although he could have been one already whilst living at Pottery Wallgate Wigan).

11th December 1853 Son Henry dies at Ince Green Lane Ince Wigan of Pneumonia aged 5. Edward is a Labourer in a Coal Miner. Someone called Mary Yates was present at the death.

14th December 1853 Son Henry buried at St Aidan Billinge.

1853 to 1855 Family move from Ince Wigan to Hindley.

5th August 1855 Son John dies at Lowe Green Hindley of Hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body) lasting 8 days aged 10. Edward is a Pony Feeder (presumably at a colliery). Brother Richard was present at the death aged 14.

7th August 1855 Son John buried at St Aidan Billinge.

7th April 1861 Census. No record can be found of the family in the 1861 census. Edward would have been about 55. There is an Elizabeth Nixon working as a House Servant at Greyhound Inn Ormskirk, born in Winstanley Wigan, aged 21 (she would have been 20).

6th November 1865 Daughter Elizabeth marries Peter Shaw at All Saints Hindley. Elizabeth is aged 24 living at Lowe Green Hindley, Peter is a Collier aged 25 living at Lowe Green Hindley. Edward is a Collier (possibly a labourer rather than a hewer). Son Richard is a witness and probably the best man as the other witness is female. Perhaps Richard and Peter were colleagues. Elizabeth and Peter have 6 children and live in Hindley. Elizabeth dies on 18th March 1907 aged 66 of Aortic Valvula Disease at County Asylum Winwick where presumably she was an inmate, though she was still living in Hindley in the 1901 census.

14th January 1866 Edward dies at Queen Row Lowe Green Hindley of Asthma aged 60. Certificate indicates that he had Asthma for 2 years. His occupation was Horse Man in Coal Mine. Informant was another Edward Nixon who was present at the death, it is unclear what relation this was. On subsequent marriage certificates of Edward’s children he is not marked as “Deceased” but this could be a fault of the registrar and the parish burial record confirms he died in 1866.

17th January 1866 Edward is buried at St Aidan Billinge. Residence says Ince but age is correct.

1866 This is the gravestone of Edward and Mary, their son Henry and their son John at St Aidan Billinge. The gravestone also has “RICHARD NIXON” at the end which could mean their son Richard was also buried with them. The gravestone is now set into a graveyard pathway, so the original grave has presumably been re-used.
