Overview
Edward Barton was born in 1870 to a Grocer from Central Wigan. Emma Annie Zoller was born in 1874 to a Pork Butcher from Nottingham. Edward and Emma were married at St George Central Wigan in 1898. 12th September 1874 Emma born at 12 York Street Nottingham to Charles and Barbara Zoller.
15th June 1898 Edward and Emma married at St George Central Wigan. Edward is aged 28, a Clothiers Assistant living at Harrogate Street Central Wigan, Emma is aged 23 living place is illegible but presumed to be Central Wigan.
1898 to 1899 Edward and Emma setup home in Beech Hill Wigan. Edward presumably starts his own Clothier business during this period too.
27th September 1899 Daughter Ellen born at 31 Buckley Terrace Beech Hill Wigan. Edward is a Master Clothier. Ellen will marry Edward William Gorton in 1924, have two sons and live in Runcorn where her husband is a Company Director. Ellen dies on 2nd April 1965 aged 64 of a Heart Attack.
31st March 1901 Census. Family living at 88 Park Road Beech Hill Wigan. Edward is a Clothier Shopkeeper aged 31, Emma is aged 26 and daughter Emma is aged 1.
25th September 1901 Son Frank born at 88 Park Road Beech Hill Wigan. Edward is a Master Clothier.
29th December 1902 Edward’s brother John marries Jessie Atherton at Wigan Parish Church.
3rd May 1903 Son Frank dies at 88 Park Road Beech Hill Wigan of Scarlet Fever aged 1, Edward was present at the death.
6th May 1903 Son Frank buried at Lower Ince Cemetery (Grave G349).
1903 to 1904 Family move from Beech Hill Wigan to Colin Street Swinley Wigan (which is the same street as Colinfield Farm Swinley Wigan where Edward’s brother Henry lives).
17th June 1904 Son Edward born at 2 Colin Street Swinley Wigan, father Edward is a Master Clothier. Son Edward becomes a Solicitor and never marries. He is living with his mother when she dies in 1943 but when son Edward dies on 10th June 1976 aged 71 he is living at 31 Knowsley Road Southport, the death being reported by one of his sister Ellen’s sons. No other information about son Edward can be found.
2nd April 1911 Census. Family living at 26 Colin Street Swinley Wigan. Edward is a Shop Keeper Clothier aged 41, Emma is aged 36, daughter Ellen is aged 11 and son Edward is aged 6.
1911 to 1921 Family move from Swinley Wigan to Parbold.
8th May 1917 Wigan Observer reports that an elderly woman named Emma Bolton of Schofield Lane Scholes Wigan was charged with stealing a pair of boy’s trousers and “articles of apparel” from premises of Edward Barton Makinson’s Arcade. A sister-in-law of Emma Bolton reported she was in a “very poor condition” and her husband was fighting in France. Magistrate gave Emma Bolton a ticking off but no sentence was passed.
19th June 1921 Census. Family living at Tan House Farm Tan House Lane Parbold. Edward is a Shopkeeper Tailor & Clothier aged 51 with premises at 17-19 Makinson Arcade Central Wigan, Emma is aged 46, Ellen is aged 21 and Edward is aged 17.
3rd September 1924 Daughter Ellen marries Edward William Gorton at Chirst Church Parbold. Daughter Ellen is living at “Amstrey” Parbold aged 24 and Edward is a Company Secretary living in Warrington aged 24 (Edward’s father is a Glue Manufacturer). The house is “Amstrey” is described as being in Tan House Lane in later certificates, the family could have moved or they could have given Tan House Farm a name. One of witnesses is Ellen’s cousin Lillie Victoria Barton (daughter of father Edward’s brother Henry). Ellen and Edward have two sons and live in Runcorn. Ellen dies on 13th September 1961 of a Heart Attack in Warrington General Hospital.
March 1926 According to Edward’s nephew Norman’s life story Edward suggested that Norman get an apprenticeship in a Chemist’s shop, but Norman did not take this up.
20th January 1930 Edward’s brother Henry’s son Thomas buried at Christ Church Parbold.
9th May 1930 Edward dies at Tan House Lane Parbold of Diabetes Mellitus (type not specified) aged 60. Occupation given as Clothier Shopkeeper. Son Edward was present at the death but whose address is given as Northdene Egham.
12th May 1930 Edward buried at Lower Ince Cemetery, grave B 588.
29th September 1939 Register. Emma living at “Aymestray” 23 Tan House Lane Parbold aged 65 with son Edward a Solicitor aged 35.
22nd June 1943 Emma dies at “Aymestry” Tan House Lane Parbold of Myocardial Degeneration aged 68. Son Edward was present at the death and was living at the same address.
25th June 1943 Emma buried at Lower Ince Cemetery, in same grave as Edward, B 588.
1943 This is the gravestone of Edward and Emma in Lower Ince Cemetery, son Frank is also mentioned maybe he was moved.
