Edward Hall was born in 1847 in Burnley to a Moulder. Ellen Mawdsley was born in 1850 in Wallgate Wigan to a Shopkeeper. Edward and Ellen were married in 1872 in Wigan. They later moved to Buxton Derbyshire where Edward was a School Teacher. They had 3 children. Ellen died in 1917 aged 66 and Edward died in 1927 aged 80.

16th February 1847 Edward born in Gatefield In Habergham Eaves Burnley to Henry and Mary Hall, Henry is an Iron Moulder.
2nd September 1850 Ellen born in Princess Street Wallgate Wigan to Henry and Ellen Mawdsley, Henry is a Shopkeeper.
20th October 1862 Ellen’s father Henry dies at 43 Princess Street Wallgate WIgan of Heart Disease, occupation given as Cow Keeper and Provision Dealer, aged 57. At this point his son John aged 19 moves to Princess Street Wallgate Wigan to take over running of the Grocery business. Ellen is aged 12.
13th August 1872 Ellen and Edward married at St Thomas Wallgate Wigan. Edward is aged 25 a School Master at the school connected to St Thomas Wallgate Wigan, living in nearby Caroline Street and Ellen is aged 21 living at Princess Street Wallgate Wigan. Ellen’s brother John and sister Margaret are witnesses. Edward and Ellen move into the School House in Caroline Street Wallgate Wigan.
12th May 1873 Son Harry born at School House Caroline Street Wallgate Wigan.
13th July 1873 Son Harry baptised at St Thomas Wallgate Wigan.
2nd April 1881 Daughter Edith born at School House Caroline Street Wallgate Wigan.
3rd April 1881 Census. Family living at School House Caroline Street Wallgate Wigan. Edward is aged 34 a School Teacher, Ellen is aged 31, Harry is aged 7 and Edith is aged 1 day. Their niece Elizabeth A Fairhurst aged 13 (daughter of Ellen’s sister Mary and husband Richard Fairhurst) is also living there as a Domestic Servant.
29th May 1881 Daughter Edith baptised at St Thomas Wallgate Wigan.
23rd March 1883 Son John born at School House Caroline Street Wallgate Wigan.
13th May 1883 Son John baptised at St Thomas Wallgate Wigan.
1883 To 1891 Family move to Buxton Derbyshire where Edward is a School Teacher in an Elementary School and Ellen runs a Lodging House.
5th April 1891 Census. Family living at 13 Terrace Road Buxton Derbyshire. Edward is aged 44 a Teacher in an Elementary School, Ellen is aged 41 a Keeper of a Lodging House, son Harry is aged 17 a “Pupil Teacher” (meaning he was a pupil that helped out teaching younger children), daughter Edith is aged 10 and son John is aged 8. Their niece Elizabeth A Fairhurst aged 23 is still living with them occupation listed as “Helps Her Aunt” presumably with the Lodging House. They also have a General Servant Mary Yorke aged 20. 13 Terrace Road is the location of Somerford House a historic villa set back from the road.
31st March 1901 Census. Family living at 13 Terrace Road Buxton Derbyshire. Edward is aged 54 now a Head Master at an Elementary School, Ellen is aged 50 still a Lodging House Keeper, son Harry is aged 27 an Assistant Master at an Elementary School, daughter Edith is aged 19 and son John is aged 18. Niece Elizabeth A Fairhurst is still living with the family aged 32.
1901 To 1911 Family move from 13 Terrace Road and Ellen stops running a Lodging House.
19th August 1901 Son Harry marries Nellie Dowler at Emmanuel Church Swadlincote Derby. Harry is aged 28 a School Master living in Buxton and Nellie is living in Swadlincote, her father William Dowler is a manufacturer (not the more famous Dowler whistle manufacturer of Birmingham). Harry and Nellie have no children, Harry continues to be a School Teacher eventually living in Hove Sussex with Nellie and his spinster sister Edith. Harry dies aged 73 on 19th August 1946 at 6 Woodruff Avenue Hove Sussex of a Duodenal Ulcer, sister Edith was the informant and was present at the death.
14th September 1907 Son John marries Florence Lilian Duddell at St Luke Chelsea. John is aged 24 a School Teacher living at 10 Rectory Chambers Church Street Chelsea and Florence is aged 18 living in West Bromwich Staffordshire. Maybe they met when John as at a previous school? John and Florence had 1 son and John continued to be a School Teacher, eventually in Watford. John died aged 83 at Peace Memorial Hospital Watford of Shock from burns whilst in bed, Misadventure, this presumably happened at Stanborough Park Nursing Home Watford where John was resident at the time.
2nd April 1911 Census. Family living at “Mawdsley” Lansdown Road Buxton Derbyshire. Edward is aged 64 an Elementary School Teacher in a Council School, Ellen is aged 60, daughter Edit is aged 30. Son Harry and his wife Nellie is also living with Edward and Ellen, Harry is aged 37 an Elementary School Teacher in a Council School and Nellie aged 38 a Milliner (noted as an Employer). Niece Elizabeth Alice Fairhurst is still living with the family, aged 43, after at least 30 years.
9th May 1917 Ellen dies aged 66 at Landowne Road Buxton Derbyshire of Influenza. Edward is retired, was the informant and was present at the death.
12th May 1917 Ellen buried at Buxton Cemetery.
1917 To 1921 Edward and son Harry move to Hove Sussex, along with daughter Edith. Niece Elizabeth Alice Fairhurst stays in Buxton.
19th June 1921 Census. Edward and daughter Edith living with son Harry and wife Nellie in 13 York Road Hove Sussex. Edward is aged 74 a Retired Teacher, son Harry is aged 48 and is out of work, Nellie is aged 49 and daughter Edith is aged 40.
